Jonathan Andic, 45, the son of Mango fashion founder Isak Andic, is fighting back against a homicide investigation — and his lawyers are now using a piece of surveillance video as a cornerstone of his defense.
Attorneys representing Jonathan released CCTV footage showing the elder Andic losing his footing on a Barcelona sidewalk outside the Mutua Universal company building, an incident that occurred ten months before his fatal plunge in the mountains.
In the clip, the 71-year-old fashion mogul stumbles forward without warning. Two men standing nearby catch him just before his head reaches the concrete, preventing serious injury, according to The Sun.
Jonathan’s defense team argues the footage supports their claim that Isak Andic had a documented history of balance problems — and that his death in the Montserrat mountains was a tragic accident, not a crime.
Isak Andic died on December 14, 2024, after falling from a cliff while hiking with Jonathan near Barcelona. Investigators initially treated the death as an accident, but prosecutors reopened the investigation in October 2025, zeroing in on Jonathan Andic.
Isak Andic founded Mango in the mid-1980s and grew it into a global fashion powerhouse. At the time of his death, Forbes valued his net worth at $4.5 billion.
Jonathan has not been formally charged with a crime, and he denies any wrongdoing. Despite that, a Spanish judge determined there was “sufficient evidence” of premeditated killing to justify his arrest.
Following his court appearance, a judge set bail at €1 million and ordered Jonathan to surrender his passport. The judge also mandated weekly court appearances.
Police pointed to inconsistencies and contradictions in Jonathan’s account of events that day on the mountain and convinced the judge to reopen the case.
Investigators described “contradictory statements” and “grey areas” in two separate accounts Jonathan gave, and his version of events did not align with forensic evidence recovered at the scene.
Catalan police gathered information from people close to the family suggesting Isak and his son had a strained relationship. Investigators also determined Jonathan had recently learned his father was in the process of changing his will before his death.
Jonathan was named executive vice-president of Mango’s holding company in January 2025 — roughly six weeks after his father’s death.
On Tuesday, Jonathan announced his resignation as the company’s vice chairman, writing a letter to employees in which he addressed the homicide investigation directly.
In the letter, reported by Euronews, Jonathan wrote: “I write these words with sincerity and humility, from the pain, helplessness and frustration of finding myself faced with a narrative of alleged guilt that does not correspond to reality.”
He also stated: “I make this decision with sadness, but convinced that it is what is best for both the company and myself. I face this process with serenity and fortitude, and I need to concentrate all my energy on proving my innocence.”
Jonathan described public perception of the case as “distorted” and insisted there is “a perception of guilt that bears no relation to reality.”
Mango recorded double-digit sales growth last year, generating €3.8 billion in revenue.
The Andic family released a statement pledging full cooperation with authorities and expressing confidence that Jonathan’s innocence would ultimately be established.
Jonathan must appear before a Spanish court on a weekly basis while the investigation moves toward its conclusion.
