President Joe Biden, following a yearlong investigation, is reportedly not expected to face charges related to his handling of classified documents.
Special counsel Robert Hur has been leading the investigation into the president’s involvement in the mishandling of classified documents at various locations. Hur aims to complete his report on the inquiry by year’s end, as informed by sources to two media outlets.
In January, Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed Hur to oversee the investigation after classified materials from Biden’s tenure as vice president were found at his former office at the Penn Biden Center for Diplomacy and Global Engagement in Washington, D.C., and at his residence in Wilmington, Delaware.
Trump has accused the Justice Department of being “weaponized” against him as he faces four criminal indictments during his 2024 presidential campaign. One of these indictments involves allegations of mishandling classified documents, which might lead to claims of a double standard if Biden is not charged for a similar offense.
Hur’s investigation included interviews with several Biden administration officials. Among those interviewed were Secretary of State Antony Blinken, White House political aide Steve Ricchetti, Biden’s former chief of staff Ron Klain and national security adviser Jake Sullivan. This information was reported by the Wall Street Journal, which also noted the anticipated absence of charges against Biden.
The report from Hur is expected to criticize Biden’s handling of the documents. However, it might distinguish between Biden’s conduct and that of Trump. The National Archives and Records Administration had to make multiple attempts to retrieve documents from Trump at Mar-a-Lago, leading to an FBI search warrant in August 2022.
In contrast, Biden’s lawyers reportedly informed the National Archives promptly about the materials found in his possession. New emails obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request revealed that the agency handled some of Biden’s records with “professionalism and discretion.”
Following Biden’s meeting with Hur last month, Trump expressed his grievances on Truth Social.
“I see that Crooked Joe Biden is working on his documents situation. He moved documents, many classified, all over the place, for years, including to CHINATOWN,” Trump wrote. “I did nothing wrong, he did, and so did many others!”
