Bobby Hunt, a former Kansas City Chiefs defensive back and Auburn standout who became one of the franchise’s most accomplished defensive players, has died at the age of 85.
The Alabama Sports Hall of Fame & Museum announced Hunt’s death in a Facebook post Friday.
A cause of death was not disclosed.
“The Alabama Sports Hall of Fame mourns the passing of 2015 Inductee Bobby Hunt,” the organization said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.”
Hunt starred at Auburn from 1959 to 1961, where he played both quarterback and defensive back during an era when two-way players were far more common.
Over 30 collegiate games, Hunt threw for 1,185 yards and five touchdowns while rushing for 1,046 yards and 14 scores, establishing himself as one of the Southeastern Conference’s most versatile athletes.
Former Alabama coach Paul “Bear” Bryant praised Hunt’s talent during his college career.
“He’s just a great football player — that’s all,” Bryant said, according to AL.com.
The Dallas Texans selected Hunt in the 11th round of the 1962 AFL Draft with the 81st overall pick.
After entering the professional ranks, Hunt transitioned full-time to safety and made an immediate impact.
As a rookie, he intercepted eight passes and earned First-Team All-AFL honors.
His eight interceptions set a franchise rookie record that stood until Marcus Peters matched the mark in 2015.
The Texans won the 1962 AFL Championship before relocating to Kansas City the following season and becoming the Chiefs.
Hunt remained with the franchise after the move and played five additional seasons in Kansas City.
He earned Second-Team All-AFL honors twice, including in 1966 when he recorded a career-high 10 interceptions.
Hunt also remains tied for the NFL record for most interceptions in a single game after recording four picks against the Houston Oilers in 1964.
Reflecting on that performance years later, Hunt downplayed the accomplishment.
“We were in a zone defense and (Oilers quarterback George) Blanda was trying to pick it apart,” Hunt told The Kansas City Star. “We just happened to be in the right place at the right time.”
In 1967, Hunt started for the Chiefs in Super Bowl I, where Kansas City fell 35-10 to Vince Lombardi’s Green Bay Packers.
He later finished his playing career with two seasons for the Cincinnati Bengals.
During eight professional seasons, Hunt appeared in 112 games, making 108 starts and recording 42 career interceptions, per Trending Politics.
After retiring as a player, Hunt entered coaching, serving as the Buffalo Bills’ defensive backs coach during the 1970 and 1971 seasons.
In recognition of his accomplishments, Hunt was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 2015.
His football career spanned from starring as a two-way player at Auburn to becoming one of the Kansas City Chiefs’ most productive defensive backs and a starter in the first Super Bowl, leaving behind a legacy that stretched across both the college and professional ranks.
