Former NBA first-round draft pick and Georgetown basketball standout Michael Sweetney has died at 43, his family announced.

Sweetney died Wednesday, according to his wife, India Sweetney, who announced his death on social media the following day. A cause of death had not been publicly released as of Friday.

“With the heaviest hearts, we are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our beloved Michael,” India Sweetney wrote.

She described her husband as a devoted father and family man, saying his children were “the light of his life.”

“He’s been my best friend for 30 years and my husband for almost 20,” she wrote, adding that the family was grateful for the messages of support but needed time and privacy following his death.

The New York Knicks, who selected Sweetney with the ninth overall pick in the 2003 NBA Draft, also issued a statement following the news.

“The Knicks are saddened to hear about the passing of Michael Sweetney,” the organization said. “Michael was an incredible person who will be missed by many. Our thoughts are with his family.”

Sweetney was born and raised in the Washington, D.C., area and emerged as a standout basketball player at Oxon Hill High School in Maryland before attending Georgetown University.

He played three seasons for the Hoyas from 2000 to 2003, averaging 18.2 points and 9.2 rebounds per game while shooting 54.4% from the field.

Sweetney produced his strongest collegiate season in 2002-03, averaging 22.8 points and 10.4 rebounds per game. He earned All-America recognition from multiple outlets and was named a finalist for national player of the year awards.

He finished his Georgetown career ranked ninth in program history with 1,750 points and fifth with 887 rebounds while also placing among the school’s leaders in blocked shots.

His performance helped make him a top-10 selection in the 2003 NBA Draft.

Sweetney spent his first two NBA seasons with the Knicks, including the 2004-05 season in which he averaged 8.4 points and 5.4 rebounds per game.

New York traded him to the Chicago Bulls in October 2005. Sweetney played two seasons with Chicago before leaving the NBA in 2007.

Across 233 regular-season NBA games, including 73 starts, Sweetney averaged 6.5 points and 4.5 rebounds in 15.5 minutes per game. He also appeared in 11 playoff games.

Sweetney continued his professional career overseas after leaving the NBA, playing in China, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Uruguay, Venezuela and other leagues before ending his playing career in 2017, according to Trending Politics.

He later moved into coaching, serving as an assistant coach at Yeshiva University from 2019 to 2023 and coaching girls varsity basketball at Ramaz School.

In August 2026, Sweetney was hired as the boys basketball coach at Golda Och Academy in West Orange, New Jersey.

Sweetney is survived by his wife and their three children.

RIP Michael Sweeney.

From all accounts, he was a really nice person. Lived here in Jersey and helped out with the youth.

Really sad for his family. God Bless.
