A Missouri college football community is mourning the sudden death of 20-year-old MicahJo Barnett, a William Jewell College running back who suffered a medical emergency shortly after scoring a touchdown in his team’s season opener.

Barnett, a junior, experienced the emergency during the first quarter of Saturday’s Division II matchup against Fort Lewis College at Greene Stadium in Liberty, Missouri. The game was suspended and ultimately canceled after officials learned of his death.

Fox 4 Kansas City reporter Harold R. Kuntz reported from the stadium on X that play had been suspended after a player suffered what Liberty Fire EMS described as “seizure-like symptoms” on the sideline.

Emergency personnel who were already at the game responded to Barnett approximately 20 minutes after kickoff, according to police.

Barnett was transported by ambulance to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Authorities have not announced his cause of death.

The medical emergency came only minutes after Barnett had provided the Cardinals with their first touchdown of the new season.

The NCAA reported that Barnett scored late in the first quarter before suffering the medical emergency.

William Jewell confirmed the devastating news in a statement Saturday afternoon, identifying Barnett as a junior business administration student and member of the Cardinals football program.

“William Jewell College and the Liberty, Missouri community mourn the passing of Micah Jo Barnett,” the school said.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Micah Jo’s family, our students, the Cardinal Football family, and the rest of our community during this time of loss.”

The college encouraged students and staff affected by Barnett’s death to seek assistance through its counseling services or the office of the chaplain.

William Jewell also organized a vigil on the campus quad Saturday night, just hours after the season opener ended in tragedy.

More than 100 people reportedly gathered to remember Barnett, with teammates, friends and members of the community honoring the young running back.

Fort Lewis College also offered its condolences following the cancellation of the game.

“Our hearts are with his family, friends, teammates, coaches, and everyone at William Jewell during this incredibly difficult time,” Fort Lewis College Director of Athletics Shawn Jakubowski said.

Barnett had deep roots in the Liberty community before beginning his college football career.

The running back previously attended Liberty North High School, where he helped the Eagles capture a Missouri state championship during his senior season.

Barnett finished that season with 1,450 all-purpose yards and 20 touchdowns, establishing himself as one of Liberty North’s standout offensive players.

He remained closely connected to the community after moving on to William Jewell, where he appeared in eight games during his freshman season.

Barnett then started five games for the Cardinals last season before suffering a season-ending injury. He also earned Academic All-Great Lakes Valley Conference honors during the 2025-26 school year.

Saturday’s game was supposed to mark Barnett’s return to action after that injury, and his touchdown gave the season opener a promising start.

William Jewell interim president Drew Van Horn told KCUR that Barnett experienced trouble breathing after scoring and returning to the sideline, per Trending Politics.

“He told the doctor he was having trouble breathing,” Van Horn said.

Barnett’s former high school coach, Andy Lierman, said the running back’s influence stretched far beyond his performance on the football field.

“When you have a young man like Micah who impacts so many kids, it’s pretty amazing,” Lierman said while reflecting on his former player.

Barnett’s teammates and friends similarly remembered him as an energetic and selfless presence who had made an impression throughout the Liberty community.

William Jewell has not released additional details about the medical condition that led to Barnett’s death, and his exact cause of death remained undisclosed as of Monday.

The college said funeral arrangements would be announced when they become available.
