A Bryan, Texas, woman’s heart went out to a man she became curious about after noticing his daily walk along the road she used to commute to work, according to a report from Breitbart News.
Rebecca Wendt said she would often spot Heath Nelson walking alongside the road during her commute and felt a strong urge to help, according to a KBTX report.
“It was just like God bopped me over the head and said, ‘Find out where that man lives and what his needs are,’” Wendt said in an interview with the Bryan, Texas, affiliate of Gray Television.
She learned that Nelson used to ride a bicycle to work but began walking two hours each way after his bike broke down.
Determined to make a difference, Wendt reportedly turned to social media, specifically Facebook, to raise funds for purchasing an electric bicycle for Nelson. The response from the community was overwhelming.
“Within about two hours I had over a thousand dollars raised,” Wendt explained.
The moment Wendt handed over the electric bicycle to Nelson was filled with emotion, according to the report.
“It was emotional, and brought tears to my eyes,” Nelson said. “You know, I mean, what she gave me was just remarkable.”
Furthermore, Wendt had some funds remaining after the bike purchase. She intended to give the leftover amount to Nelson, who plans to utilize it for getting new dentures, according to the report.
