Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has initiated a lawsuit against Pfizer, alleging that the pharmaceutical giant misrepresented the effectiveness of its COVID-19 vaccine and engaged in a campaign to censor critics.
The lawsuit claims Pfizer deceived the public by asserting its vaccine was 95% effective and made misleading statements regarding the vaccine’s duration of protection, its ability to prevent transmission and its effectiveness against variants.
The complaint further accuses Pfizer of coercing social media platforms to silence prominent individuals who challenged these claims, including former FDA Commissioner Brett Giroir and journalist Alex Berenson.
“Pfizer intentionally misrepresented the efficacy of its COVID-19 vaccine and censored persons who threatened to disseminate the truth in order to facilitate fast adoption of the product and expand its commercial opportunity,” the lawsuit states. The company then allegedly “coerced social media platforms to silence prominent truth-tellers” including journalist Alex Berenson, engaging in a “censorship campaign.”
Paxton’s complaint also references government reports indicating that in some regions by 2021 a higher percentage of vaccinated individuals were dying from COVID-19 compared to the unvaccinated.
“We are pursuing justice for the people of Texas, many of whom were coerced by tyrannical vaccine mandates to take a defective product sold by lies,” Paxton stated. “The facts are clear. Pfizer did not tell the truth about their COVID-19 vaccines.”
Paxton also criticized the Biden Administration, claiming it exploited the pandemic to impose illegal public health decrees and enrich pharmaceutical companies. He vowed to use every available tool to protect citizens misled and harmed by Pfizer’s actions.
In response, Pfizer dismissed the lawsuit as baseless. The company defended its COVID-19 vaccine, stating, “Since its initial authorization by FDA in December 2020, the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine has been administered to more than 1.5 billion people, demonstrated a favorable safety profile in all age groups, and helped protect against severe COVID-19 outcomes, including hospitalization and death.” Pfizer maintained that its representations about the vaccine have been accurate and science-based.
