Former NFL linebacker and current congressman Colin Allred announced on Wednesday that he would be running for the Democratic nomination for the 2024 Senate election in Texas, prompting Ted Cruz to retort with scathing attacks on Allred’s values and loyalties.
Allred, who entered politics in 2017 after a prior career dedicated to chasing a brown ball, announced his bid for the Senate via a Youtube video on Wednesday. In the video, Allred focuses on his actions during the January 6 U.S. Capitol incident, presenting himself as a valiant warrior in contrast to his characterization of Cruz as a cowardly demagogue.
“I remember hearing the glass break and the shouts coming closer,” Allred said. “I texted my wife, ‘Whatever happens, I love you.’ Then I took off my jacket and got ready to take on anyone who came through that door. And Ted Cruz? He cheered on that mob and then hid in a supply closet when they stormed the Capitol.”
The Cruz campaign wasted no time rebuking the prospective challenger, attacking Allred for his alleged fidelity to the unpopular former House speaker and his socially progressive views.
“Democrats have once again turned to a far-left radical to run for Senate. Not only does Colin Allred vote with Nancy Pelosi 100% of the time, but his voting record is completely out-of-touch with Texas,” Cruz spokesman Nick Maddux said.
“Allred wants men to compete in women’s sports, isn’t serious about addressing the crisis at the border, wants to take away law-abiding Texans’ guns, and is soft on punishing murderers,” Maddux continued.
Cruz announced his own reelection campaign last February, marking the Texan politician’s third bid to serve the state of Texas in the United State Senate. Cruz’s last congressional election in 2018 attracted considerable media attention, as the telegenic Democratic challenger Beto O’Rourke polled surprisingly close to the incumbent Republican leading up to November’s contest.
Cruz ultimately prevailed with a margin of over 2%, and O’Rourke went on to stage an underwhelming campaign followed by a landslide loss in last year’s gubernatorial election against incumbent Republican Greg Abbott.
