The Big Name Claiming Bill Maher Will Get His ‘A** Whooped’ if He Goes on ‘Real Time’ is Surprising

A late-night host known for skewering the left has stirred fresh controversy after floating support for Vice President JD Vance in 2028, only to find himself drawn into a separate public standoff with a Michigan Senate candidate.

Bill Maher told an interviewer in July that his ballot remains up for grabs heading into the next presidential race.

He warned that a Democratic Party drifting toward the Democratic Socialists of America could push him toward backing Vance instead.

Maher pointed to the DSA’s own platform documents as evidence for his alarm, rejecting any suggestion that his concerns were exaggerated.

“I’m not living in communist America … I’ve read the quotes from the DSA platform, from their own mouths. Don’t tell me I’m not seeing what I am seeing,” Maher said.

He pressed further, questioning what kind of society socialist-aligned Democrats imagine they could actually build.

“What world do they think we could possibly live in under these conditions? That’s just a level of nutty that I’m so glad, whatever it was I was like, I’m not going along, ’cause this is where it ends,” Maher said.

Those comments landed against the backdrop of Maher’s decades-long reputation for challenging religious institutions, a pattern that resurfaced this month in his exchange with Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed.

Speaking with journalist Chuck Todd, El-Sayed laid out his approach to appearing alongside media figures whose views he opposes.

He singled out podcaster Joe Rogan first, accusing him of amplifying “vaccine deniers,” yet said he would still sit down for an interview on Rogan’s show.

El-Sayed then pivoted to Maher, recalling a string of past remarks the host has made about people who share El-Sayed’s faith.

“You know how many terrible things Bill Maher has said about people like me?” El-Sayed said. “Terrible, awful things.”

Rather than avoid Maher’s program, El-Sayed framed an appearance as a chance to confront the host directly in front of his own audience.

He described wanting viewers to see him “get his a** whooped on his own show by a guy who prays like I do.”

El-Sayed said his broader goal is to reach Maher’s viewers and persuade them that many of the host’s positions are not “viable.”

Maher addressed the situation on his own broadcast, drawing a sharp line between his critiques of Islamic doctrine and any personal animosity toward El-Sayed.

“It’s not people like you, I would love to have you on,” Maher said, extending an on-air invitation.

He insisted his commentary has always targeted ideology rather than individuals or ethnic identity.

“I talk about Islam. It’s never personal, and it’s never about race. It’s about ideas. Religion is an opinion; that’s all religion is,” Maher said.

Maher also previewed specific points of disagreement he expects to raise, including how women are treated under certain religious frameworks.

“I have different views on… how women should be treated and things like that that we will discuss,” Maher said, adding that he hopes El-Sayed follows through and appears.

This is not the first time Maher’s stance on Islam has sparked a public clash with a prominent figure.

In 2014, actor Ben Affleck confronted Maher on air over his characterization of the religion, leading to a heated back-and-forth that drew national attention.

During that exchange, Maher declared, “Islam is the only religion that acts like the mafia, that will f*cking kill you if you say the wrong thing, draw the wrong picture or write the wrong book.”

No date has been set for El-Sayed’s appearance on Maher’s show, and neither side has indicated when the sit-down might take place.

The dueling controversies have placed Maher at the center of two separate storylines: one involving his warnings about socialism’s grip on the Democratic Party, and another involving his long-running friction with critics of his views on religion.
