Whoopi Goldberg was caught off guard by a fan during a live Wednesday morning broadcast of “The View.”
The encounter began when a woman heckled the senior host, referring to Goldberg as an “old broad.”
The encounter occurred in the opening minutes of the show. The hosts entered the stage and took their seats per usual, and the audience seemed “very happy,” according to a report in Entertainment Weekly.
The waters were calm until a female audience member shouted a question to Whoopi, referring to the 67-year-old Oscar winner as an “old broad.”
Taken aback, Whoopi asked, “Did you just call me an ‘old broad’?”
The veteran stage star and comedian quickly made light of the comment, saying, “Yeah, she did. She said, ‘You old broad,’ and I was like, ‘Hey, it’s Wednesday, and I am an old broad and happy about it.’”
The camera swiveled to a woman in the audience donning a large fur hat who nodded to acknowledge that she made the comment.
Whoopi followed up by saying: “The alternative is not attractive to any of us,” said Goldberg. “We all want to be old broads and old dudes, you know?”

The New York Post reported that the “fur-capped woman later became a focal point for the cameraman throughout the show.”
Goldberg wisely did not escalate what could have been a career-damaging confrontation, having recently been reprimanded for multiple insensitive, if not ill-considered, statements.
In Goldberg’s most recent apology, she said: “While doing press in London, I was asked about my comments from earlier this year. I tried to convey to the reporter what I had said and why, and attempted to recount that time.”
Goldberg continued: “It was never my intention to appear as if I was doubling down on hurtful comments, especially after talking with and hearing people like rabbis and old and new friends weighing in.
The actress added:
“I’m still learning a lot, and believe me, I heard everything everyone said to me. I believe that the Holocaust was about race, and I am still as sorry now as I was then that I upset, hurt, and angered people,” the actress continued. “My sincere apologies again, especially to everyone who thought this was a fresh rehash of the subject. I promise it was not.”
