More information on the cause of Tina Turner’s death has come to light just one day after the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll died.
An Instagram post announced Turner’s death on Wednesday. She was 83 years old.
The post read: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Tina Turner. With her music and her boundless passion for life, she enchanted millions of fans around the world and inspired the stars of tomorrow.
The post continued: “Today we say goodbye to a dear friend who leaves us all her greatest work: her music. All our heartfelt compassion goes out to her family. Tina, we will miss you dearly.”
The notable singer and actress earned 12 Grammy Awards, eight competitive awards, three Grammy Hall of Fame awards and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, according to Page Six.
Turner’s rep initially reported that Turner suffered from a long illness and passed away at her Küsnacht, Switzerland, home.
Two months before her death, Turner acknowledged that she was in poor health and in “great danger” due to an ongoing battle with kidney disease.
In a March 9 Instagram post, Turner wrote:
“My kidneys are victims of my not realising [sic] that my high blood pressure should have been treated with conventional medicine. I have put myself in great danger by refusing to face the reality that I need daily, lifelong therapy with medication. For far too long I believed that my body was an untouchable and indestructible bastion.”
In 2021, Turner noted she had dealt with multiple physical and mental issues over the years, including a form of post-traumatic stress disorder stemming from an abusive relationship with her first husband, music artist Ike Turner.
“I had an abusive life,” Turner told the New York Post in March 2021. “There’s no other way to tell the story. It’s a reality. It’s a truth. That’s what you’ve got, so you have to accept it.”
In various interviews, Turner acknowledged attempting suicide in 1968, experiencing a stroke in 2013, battling intestinal cancer in 2016 and suffering kidney failure in 2017.
Her loss is mourned by many. RTM previously reported that Mick Jagger honored his “friend,” writing: “I’m so saddened by the passing of my wonderful friend Tina Turner. She was truly an enormously talented performer and singer.”
Basketball great “Magic” Johnson wrote that Turner was “The legendary queen of rock n’ roll.”
Singer/dancer/songwriter Ciara wrote: “Heaven has gained an angel. Rest in Paradise Tina Turner. Thank you for the inspiration you gave us all.”
