Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy (D), a prominent anti-Trump voice in the Senate, was recently seen sharing an intimate evening with progressive media mogul Tara McGowan, just months after revealing his separation from his wife.
The two were photographed enjoying a cozy dinner at a popular Washington, D.C., bar, sparking rumors about the nature of their relationship.

Murphy, 51, and McGowan, 39, were spotted together on a Monday night at the Red Hen, a well-known bar located in the city’s Bloomingdale neighborhood, just one mile from Capitol Hill. Sources told the New York Post that the pair appeared affectionate during the outing, with Murphy wrapping his arm around McGowan’s shoulder at one point.
The two were seen scanning the menu for rustic Italian fare, with the atmosphere described as “cuddly” and “cutesy.” The outing occurred the night before President Donald Trump’s address to a joint session of Congress, an event Murphy opted not to attend.
Despite the public outing, Murphy is still married to his wife, Cathy Holahan, a Washington, D.C., lawyer. The couple has two children and announced their separation in November 2024.
According to an email to close friends, Murphy and Holahan revealed that they had decided to separate after 17 years of marriage. They expressed a mutual desire to maintain a respectful and collaborative relationship for the sake of their children, emphasizing their commitment to co-parenting.
However, The Post notes that public court records show no divorce filings in Connecticut or Washington, D.C.
McGowan, a political strategist and founder of Courier Newsroom, has been an outspoken supporter of Murphy’s political views. She has used her platform to promote Murphy’s stance on various issues, including gun control, immigration and foreign relations.
McGowan has frequently shared posts highlighting Murphy’s policy positions, such as a call for banning assault weapons and his criticism of Republican leadership on border legislation.
Before becoming involved with Murphy’s political efforts, McGowan was married to Michael Halle, a fellow Democratic strategist. Halle has worked on several high-profile campaigns, including those of former Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and former President Barack Obama.
McGowan filed for divorce from Halle in May 2023, citing “irreconcilable differences.” Their divorce was finalized in April 2024, according to the outlet.
Insiders have speculated that Murphy and McGowan are romantically involved, with one source pointing to a recent selfie McGowan posted on her private Instagram account with Murphy. The caption read, “not postponing joy,” fueling speculation about their relationship.
McGowan has since deactivated her X account as of Monday morning.
Courier Newsroom, which McGowan founded in 2019, has faced criticism for its connections to liberal donors, including George Soros and Reid Hoffman. Critics have alleged that the organization operates as a “liberal dark money” group, although the Federal Election Commission dismissed these claims.
Courier Newsroom’s content aims to engage persuadable voters through unassuming social media posts that link to political messaging, a strategy designed to influence swing-state voters.
In addition to her work at Courier, McGowan co-founded Lockwood Strategy, a political campaign firm that helped Virginia Democrats regain control of the state legislature in 2019, The Post reports. Lockwood’s digital ads were also used by progressive organizations such as Planned Parenthood and the National Democratic Redistricting Committee.
The rumors of Murphy and McGowan’s relationship have triggered criticism on social media among conservatives, who have called the relationship “inappropriate” given his marital status and influence in Washington. Many speculated whether McGowan was responsible for the separation announcement.
