Virginia Democrats have turned the law on its head by turning a violation of state statute into a fundraiser talking point.
House of Delegates candidate Susanna Gibson performed live sex acts with her husband using an online streaming platform, according to a report from The Washington Post.
The candidate is a married 40-year-old nurse practitioner with two children, according to the report.
Gibson asked Chaturbate viewers to give “tips” for performing certain acts with her husband that the Democratic Party candidate said would go to a “good cause,” the report noted.
Virginia State Sen. L. Louise Lucas has publicly supported Gibson, urging voters to “make this the biggest fundraising day of [Gibson’s] campaign” and shared a link for campaign donations.
It is a misdemeanor under Virginia law for anyone to make “an obscene display or exposure of his person, or the private parts thereof, in any public place.” Laws against pornography can be murky but exposure is unambigous.
Rather than prosecute or call for the candidate to end her campaign after soliciting donations for live sex acts, defenders from her party are calling detractors mysoginists.
Lucas alleged the story’s release was orchestrated by Virginia’s Republican governor in an attempt to embarrass and humiliate Gibson, which she claims failed completely.
“Susanna and I just crossed over 100 donations today to fight back against the Republicans,” Lucas stated. “If you are as pissed as I am then please donate tonight!”
The videos were posted in September 2022, after Gibson had officially announced her candidacy for the House of Delegates in the 57th district.
“Anybody who looks at this knows it’s a hit job,” said defense contractor Amanda Linton, according to a report from Fox News.
Linton, who donated $25 to Gibson’s campaign after learning about the videos, announced her intention to donate an additional $100, even though she resides outside Gibson’s district.
Emily’s List, an organization that advocates for Democratic female candidates, also stood by Gibson, the report noted.
“Susanna originally ran for office because of the overturning of Roe and she’s been very outspoken on standing up for reproductive rights,” remarked Emily’s List spokeswoman Lauren Chou.
“People are coming out in support of Susanna because they know that Republicans are coming after her because she was standing up for them.”
Addressing the controversy, Gibson said, “My political opponents and their Republican allies have proven they’re willing to commit a sex crime to attack me and my family because there’s no line they won’t cross to silence women when they speak up.”
She labeled the incident as “an illegal invasion of my privacy designed to humiliate me.”
