Fox News senior meteorologist Janice Dean announced she is stepping away from her on-air role after more than two decades, citing health challenges related to multiple sclerosis.
Dean, who has served with Fox News Media for more than 22 years, shared the news in a video message posted Thursday, saying years of early morning schedules and the demands of live television have become increasingly difficult to manage while living with the neurological disease.
“For a long time, I was able to handle the early mornings, the many hours on my feet, and the stress of broadcasting live,” Dean said. “Getting up at 2:30 in the morning and performing anything is hard, but especially someone who has multiple sclerosis.”
Dean said she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, commonly known as MS, in 2005 and has undergone various treatments for more than two decades. Although she said early diagnosis and therapy have helped manage the condition, she acknowledged that her symptoms have gradually progressed over time.
“There is no cure for MS,” Dean said. “Over time my symptoms have progressed. Unfortunately, lack of sleep and stress are some of the biggest triggers.”
She said her physicians ultimately recommended that she step away from her broadcasting duties.
“My doctors agreed that stepping away was necessary for my health,” Dean said.
The veteran meteorologist has been a familiar face on Fox & Friends and also contributed forecasts and weather coverage for Fox Weather. In addition to her broadcasting career, Dean has hosted a podcast and authored several books, including the memoirs “Mostly Sunny” and “Make Your Own Sunshine,” along with a series of children’s weather books.
In a separate message posted on social media, Dean thanked viewers for their support during her recent absence.
“I know so many of you have been wondering where I’ve been,” she wrote. “Please know I’ve read your comments, prayers and words of support and kindness. It meant the world to me. Goodbyes are hard. But they are necessary before you can meet again.”
Fox News Media praised Dean’s career and expressed support for her decision in a statement, as reported by Conservative Brief.
“Throughout her 22-year career with Fox News Media, Janice Dean has inspired viewers with her warmth, resilience, and dedication,” the network said. “Her willingness to share her personal journeys has touched countless lives and served as a source of strength and encouragement to many. We fully support Janice’s courageous decision to step away from her role as senior meteorologist on FOX & Friends and are grateful for her many contributions.”
Dean previously revealed late last year that she was taking an extended break from work and social media because of health concerns.
At the time, she said she needed rest and credited Fox News executives for supporting her decision to focus on recovery and spend time with her family.
Multiple sclerosis is a chronic disease affecting the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves. It damages the protective covering surrounding nerve fibers, disrupting communication between the brain and the rest of the body. While there is no cure, medications and other therapies can help manage symptoms and slow disease progression.
