Veteran Hollywood actor Tom Skerritt, best known for his memorable performances in Top Gun, Alien, and the Emmy-winning television drama Picket Fences, has died at the age of 93.

Skerritt passed away Wednesday, October 21, from natural causes, his family confirmed in a statement released Thursday.

The actor’s death brings an end to a career spanning more than six decades, during which he appeared in over 150 film and television productions.

“Our family is deeply saddened to share that Tom Skerritt passed away on October 21, 2026, from natural causes,” his family said.

The statement described Skerritt as a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather whose life extended far beyond his accomplishments in Hollywood.

“We are heartbroken by his loss,” the family added.

Skerritt became a familiar face to millions of moviegoers through his portrayal of Commander Mike “Viper” Metcalf in the 1986 blockbuster Top Gun.

Appearing alongside Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer, Skerritt played the experienced naval aviator responsible for training an elite group of fighter pilots.

The film became one of the defining action movies of the decade and introduced Skerritt to another generation of audiences.

Years earlier, he delivered another memorable performance as Captain Arthur Dallas in Ridley Scott’s 1979 science-fiction horror classic Alien.

Skerritt portrayed the captain of the Nostromo, a commercial spacecraft whose crew encounters a deadly extraterrestrial creature.

The film became a landmark in science-fiction cinema and remains one of the actor’s most recognizable projects.

His accomplishments were not limited to the big screen.

Skerritt earned widespread acclaim for portraying Sheriff Jimmy Brock in the CBS drama Picket Fences, which premiered in 1992.

The performance earned him the Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 1993.

He subsequently received Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award nominations for his work.

Born August 25, 1933, in Detroit, Michigan, Skerritt initially pursued a very different career path.

After graduating from David Mackenzie High School in 1951, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving as a classification specialist.

Following his military service, Skerritt attended college with assistance from the G.I. Bill before eventually transferring to the University of California, Los Angeles.

Although he initially studied English and considered directing, an interest in acting eventually changed his professional ambitions.

His film career began in 1962 with War Hunt, appearing alongside Robert Redford and Sydney Pollack.

Director Robert Altman later helped advance Skerritt’s career by casting him in the 1970 military comedy MASH*.

He subsequently appeared in numerous Hollywood productions, including The Turning Point, Steel Magnolias and A River Runs Through It.

Skerritt remained professionally active well into his later years, appearing in films such as Tears of the Sun, Whiteout and East of the Mountains.

Outside acting, he dedicated considerable time to supporting military veterans.

In 2012, Skerritt co-founded the Red Badge Project, an organization helping veterans address post-traumatic stress through creative writing and storytelling.

He also established the production company Triple Squirrels with his wife, Julie Tokashiki, in 2020.

The couple married in 1998 after meeting during the production of Picket Fences.

Skerritt’s family remembered his humor, generosity, curiosity and commitment to helping others.

“While the world knew Tom through his remarkable acting career, we knew him for his humor, curiosity, wisdom, generosity, and the love he brought into our lives,” the family said.

He is survived by his wife, five children, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

His family has requested privacy while mourning and indicated that information regarding a memorial service will be announced later, per People Magazine.
