16-Count Felony Indictment Filed Against Louisiana AG Amid Heated State vs. New Orleans Court System Dispute

A New Orleans grand jury has indicted Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill on 16 felony counts, escalating a months-long political and legal clash between state leadership and New Orleans officials over control of the city’s court system.

The indictment includes eight counts of public intimidation and eight counts of malfeasance in office following a weeks-long investigation led by a special prosecutor.

The proceedings themselves became part of the controversy as the indictment was returned.

Courtroom access was restricted, reporters were removed during key moments, and at least one journalist was reportedly handcuffed by deputies enforcing security orders, according to WWL.

Officials said the measures were tied to grand jury confidentiality and courtroom security, while media representatives and attorneys raised concerns about transparency and access.

Special prosecutor Laurie White, a former Orleans Criminal District Court judge, confirmed the indictment and said the grand jury completed its review at the end of its term.

She also said Murrill faces a $400,000 bond and an arrest warrant.

White defended the handling of proceedings, arguing that concerns about intimidation of public officials were central to the case and saying, “Aren’t we a little tired as New Orleanians having everyone in the state kicking New Orleans?”

At the core of the indictment are letters Murrill sent in May to Mayor Helena Moreno, District Attorney Jason Williams, and members of the City Council.

In those letters, she warned that city officials could face legal consequences under state law if they continued efforts related to restructuring New Orleans’ clerk of court system, including potential removal from office.

Those warnings emerged from a broader dispute over how New Orleans’ court system should be organized, particularly involving attempts by city officials to restructure clerk of court operations, according to Shreveport Times.

The disagreement has unfolded alongside legislative action and litigation that ultimately reinforced a consolidated structure under state law, deepening tensions between local and state authorities over judicial administration.

Murrill forcefully rejected the indictment, calling it “retaliatory, meritless, and unconstitutional,” and said she will file an emergency supervisory writ with the Louisiana Supreme Court.

She also alleged that confidential grand jury information was improperly leaked and criticized restrictions placed on media access during proceedings, according to WVUE.

Gov. Jeff Landry (R) quickly defended Murrill and condemned the indictment, calling the Orleans Parish justice system a “kangaroo court.”

He also pledged to pardon her if she is convicted and said he would direct State Police to investigate alleged misconduct tied to the grand jury proceedings, sharply widening the political divide between state and local leadership.

Murrill also received support from the Republican Party of Louisiana.

In a post on X, the party wrote that she is being targeted for simply doing her job, calling the criticism “politically motivated attacks” and part of “baseless, Biden-era lawfare tactics.”

They stress she was elected to enforce the law, not “yield to political intimidation,” and has acted with “integrity, professionalism, and an unwavering commitment to justice.”

Legal analysts say the case reflects a broader struggle over authority in New Orleans, particularly involving prosecutorial power and the boundaries between state oversight and local governance.

Murrill remains in office while the case proceeds, and additional legal challenges are expected as both sides contest both the indictment itself and the procedures used to bring it.
