A leaked account from inside the White House is raising new questions about President Donald Trump’s proposed peace agreement with Iran after administration insiders reportedly acknowledged that Tehran may have gained significant leverage in the negotiations.
The revelations surfaced Friday after Vice President J.D. Vance’s planned trip to Switzerland for high-level talks with Iranian officials was abruptly canceled.
Publicly, the Trump administration sought to project confidence.
“We didn’t meet out of desperation, Iran did. They are finished! We’ll play out the 60 days. They get no money, not ten cents!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Privately, however, several sources painted a far different picture.
“Yeah, the Iranians hold the cards,” one White House source told the Daily Mail. “It is unclear how much more we can do to please them. Iran has also successfully strained America’s relationship with our best ally in the Middle East, Israel.”
The source went even further, describing Vance’s now-scrapped diplomatic mission as a “suicide mission.”
The remarks represent one of the most striking public admissions yet that some inside the administration are frustrated with the state of negotiations.
The proposed agreement is intended to halt hostilities, reopen the Strait of Hormuz and establish a framework for future discussions over Iran’s nuclear program.
But the negotiations suffered a major setback when Iranian participation in a planned summit in Switzerland reportedly stalled.
The collapse of the planned meeting quickly triggered criticism from foreign policy observers.
Former diplomat Brett Bruen compared the situation to a public rejection.
“Tehran stood Vance up for the prom and all he can do is sulk on the sofa,” Bruen said.
He also blasted the administration’s approach, calling it “American groveling.”
“This isn’t American greatness, it’s American groveling for a ceremony to sign a concept of a plan for our capitulation,” Bruen said.
Administration officials forcefully rejected those characterizations, per the Daily Mail.
Parker Magid, a spokesman for Vance, dismissed the anonymous sources.
“There’s no debate that the President holds the cards,” Magid said.
He also argued that critics lacked insight into the administration’s decision-making.
“None of these sources have any influence over or knowledge of this administration whatsoever,” he said.
White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly likewise defended the negotiations.
She said the proposed memorandum “gives the world a real chance at peace” and argued that Trump and Vance had shown courage in confronting the Iranian nuclear issue.
The controversy has placed additional attention on Vance, who has become the administration’s chief public advocate for the agreement.
The vice president spent months helping lead negotiations and had been expected to participate in the now-postponed talks in Switzerland.
The setback also exposed apparent divisions over the agreement.
According to the report, some officials remain uneasy about the concessions being discussed and whether Iran intends to honor any commitments it makes.
For now, negotiations remain alive, but the leaked comments revealed growing frustration behind the scenes.
While Trump continues to insist a deal is within reach, the remarks from administration insiders suggest confidence inside the White House may not be nearly as strong as the public message being delivered from the podium.
