Former President Trump declared at the CPAC event Saturday he will stay in the 2024 presidential race even if criminally charged.
“This is the final battle, they know it,” Donald Trump said after an address to the Conservative Political Action Conference audience in Washington, D.C. “I know it, you know it, and everybody knows it, this is it. Either they win or we win. And if they win, we no longer have a country.”
He declared he would be more than a voice for the country, he would be a warrior that would bring justice and retribution for the wronged.
The strongly worded messages he delivered about election integrity, border security and holding China financially accountable for the COVID-19 pandemic galvanized listeners. His resolve to persevere in the face of persecution and prosecution resonated with his audience.
State and federal law enforcement have drawn targets on the 45th president, which some political analysts believe explains Trump’s very early declaration of his candidacy. Opponents hoped he would be indicted before he announced his intention to seek the presidency again, while supporters hoped investigations would be paused during the campaign season.
Department of Justice officials have separate investigations targeting the former president. U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland announced investigations about Trump’s handling of classified material after leaving office. The attorney general is also investigating if Trump can be charged with crimes related to the 2021 Capitol riot.
A Georgia grand jury said a lot of indictments should be expected in the prosecution pursued by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis. The special grand jury reviewed evidence and testimony from about 75 people to determine if Trump broke state election law in the days after the 2020 general election.
“There may be some names on that list that you wouldn’t expect,” jury forewoman Emily Kohrs told CNN. “But the big name that everyone keeps asking me about – I don’t think you will be shocked.”
“Jury foreman, a rather bizarre young woman is going around doing media interviews and saying exactly what’s going on, one of many grand juries,” Trump said Saturday, adding his opponents will “do anything they can to hurt me politically because they’re afraid of me and they’re afraid of you, that’s what it is.”
