One attorney for former President Donald Trump warned Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis against a presidential bid, at a rally on Monday before the midterm elections.
“I think I like what DeSantis is doing in Florida. But, he needs to stay in Florida,” attorney Alina Habba said during an interview on Right Side Broadcasting Network from a Trump rally in Vandalia, Ohio, adding, “DeSantis is DeSantis because of Trump.”
Trump previously endorsed the governor who is rumored to be planning a run for the presidency in 2024. However, DeSantis has been silent on the issue, saying that he was more focused on the midterms than any future possible run. In August, he refused to tell Fox News if he would support Trump should he run for reelection.
“People have asked me about that, probably about a thousand different times,” the governor said. “I’m basically, I’m keeping my eye on the ball here in Florida.”
Later, during his debate against Democratic opponent Charlie Crist last month, he said, “I know that Charlie is itching to talk about 2024 and Joe Biden. But I just want to make things very, very clear: The only worn-out old donkey I’m looking to put out to pasture is Charlie Crist.”
However, during that same debate, DeSantis also refused to definitively answer whether or not he would serve the full four-year term as governor, hinting that he may have higher aspirations.
Trump himself has suggested that DeSantis would be making a mistake challenging him in 2024.
“I don’t know if he is running. I think if he runs, he could hurt himself very badly. I really believe he could hurt himself badly,” the former president said. “I think he would be making a mistake, I think the base would not like it — I don’t think it would be good for the party.”
Trump went so far as to take a crack at DeSantis in a recent rally, referring to him as “Ron DeSanctimonious,” a comment that DeSantis has not responded to but that other voices have pointed out, some suggesting that Trump may not be as safe in the Republican nomination as he thinks.
“Not tired of winning,” remarked former Trump Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in a Saturday Twitter post. “@GovRonDeSantis you’ve proven conservative policies work. Florida is better for it. Vote for @GovRonDeSantis.”
