President Donald Trump is demanding a federal investigation into Maryland’s mail-in ballot operation after state election officials admitted that a significant ballot distribution error impacted voters ahead of the gubernatorial primary election.
Maryland’s State Board of Elections acknowledged that a vendor error caused some voters to receive incorrect mail-in ballots tied to the upcoming gubernatorial primary.
State officials responded by launching a statewide replacement effort affecting hundreds of thousands of voters who had already requested ballots for the election cycle.
According to Politico, officials indicated that more than 500,000 Maryland voters had signed up to vote by mail.
Trump blasted the situation in a Truth Social post Monday, accusing Maryland Democrats of mishandling the election system and arguing the error unfairly disadvantages Republican candidates.
The president also announced plans to ask Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche and the Department of Justice (DOJ) to immediately examine the circumstances surrounding the ballot issue.
“In Maryland, they sent out 500,000 Illegal Mail In Ballots, and they got caught!” Trump wrote. “So now, they’re going to send out 500,000 more Mail In Ballots, but nobody knows what’s happening with the first 500,000 they sent.”
Trump further alleged that many of the ballots were directed toward Democrat voters and accused Democratic Gov. Wes Moore of allowing the situation to unfold in a way that benefits his party politically.
The president argued the incident raises larger questions about how long similar election problems may have existed in the state.
State election officials pushed back against Trump’s characterization of the controversy, insisting the ballot problem stemmed from a printing or distribution mistake rather than evidence of voter fraud.
Maryland election administrator Jared DeMarinis stated publicly that no “fake” ballots had been issued and accused critics of spreading confusion about the election process.
“First I want to assure the voters & the public that NO Fake Mail-in ballots were distributed,” DeMarinis said, according to WBFF. “The wording in President Trump’s post regarding Maryland’s election seeks to mislead, sow distrust and create misinformation.”
Maryland officials also stated that the original ballots sent in error would be invalidated and removed from the counting process before final tabulation occurs.
Election authorities said voters impacted by the mailing issue would receive updated guidance explaining how to properly submit their replacement ballots before the primary election deadline, according to The Gateway Pundit.
The controversy quickly drew reactions from conservative lawmakers across the state.
The Maryland Freedom Caucus accused Democratic leaders and election officials of creating what they described as another breakdown in Maryland’s election system.
The group argued that sending replacement ballots after the original error raises serious concerns about oversight, accountability, and voter confidence.
Despite mounting criticism, Maryland election officials continue insisting safeguards remain in place to protect the integrity of the election.
State leaders say corrective measures are underway and maintain the ballot error does not compromise the broader voting system.
The dispute, however, has intensified nationwide scrutiny surrounding mail-in voting as the 2026 election cycle continues to escalate politically.
