President-elect Donald Trump doubled down on his proposal to merge Canada with the United States mere hours after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s resignation announcement.
Resist the Mainstream reported Monday that multiple sources close to the situation expected Trudeau to announce his resignation before a crucial national caucus meeting scheduled for Wednesday.
Trump took to Truth Social to promote his vision of Canadian statehood, claiming widespread Canadian support for the idea.
“Many people in Canada LOVE being the 51st State,” Trump declared, suggesting that such a merger would eliminate trade barriers and enhance security for both nations.
“Justin Trudeau knew this, and resigned,” the president-elect continued.
“Together, what a great Nation it would be,” he added at the end of this social media post.
The timing of Trump’s statements, coming directly after Trudeau’s resignation announcement, has intensified attention on the complex relationship between the two countries.
Fox News outlined that earlier Monday Trudeau revealed his intention to step down as both Prime Minister and Liberal Party leader, citing internal party conflicts that he believes could hamper his effectiveness in future elections.
“I intend to resign as party leader, as Prime Minister, after the party selects its next leader through a robust nationwide competitive process,” Trudeau stated in his morning address.
The announcement, delivered outside Rideau Cottage, came nearly two years after Trudeau’s contentious showdown with thousands of truckers who paralyzed Ottawa in protest of vaccine mandates.
