President Donald Trump announced Sunday that the U.S. and Iran have completed a peace agreement that he said will end more than three months of conflict, reopen the Strait of Hormuz and prevent Tehran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump declared that the agreement was “now complete” and authorized the immediate reopening of the strategic waterway, one of the world’s most important routes for global energy shipments.
“Let the oil flow!” Trump wrote.
The announcement came shortly after Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif confirmed that the U.S. and Iran had agreed to permanently cease military operations and move forward with implementation of the accord.
According to officials involved in the negotiations, the agreement includes the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, the lifting of the U.S. naval blockade on Iranian ports and a framework for future negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program.
The Strait of Hormuz handles roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil shipments, and disruptions during the conflict contributed to volatility in global energy markets.
Trump said the agreement ensures Iran will not obtain a nuclear weapon, a goal he has repeatedly described as the central objective of U.S. policy toward Tehran.
Iranian officials have also indicated that the framework includes commitments related to nuclear restrictions, sanctions relief and the eventual release of frozen Iranian assets.
While Trump described the deal as complete, several major issues remain subject to future negotiations.
Officials from both countries are expected to begin technical-level discussions in the coming days regarding Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile, verification procedures and the long-term structure of a final nuclear settlement.
Those negotiations are expected to take place during a 60-day period established under the agreement.
A draft framework described by Iranian officials calls for Iran to halt further advancement of its nuclear program while broader negotiations continue.
The agreement was brokered with assistance from Pakistan and Qatar following months of diplomacy aimed at ending a conflict that threatened regional stability and global energy supplies.
The breakthrough came despite concerns that renewed fighting in Lebanon could derail the negotiations. Trump publicly criticized military actions that he said risked undermining the peace process, per USA Today.
Neither the White House nor Iranian officials have yet released the full text of the agreement.
A formal memorandum documenting the accord is expected to be finalized in Switzerland later this week, though both sides are already treating the agreement as in effect. Technical implementation talks are expected to begin shortly afterward.
If successfully implemented, the accord would represent one of the most significant diplomatic breakthroughs between the United States and Iran in decades and could reshape relations between the longtime adversaries while easing tensions across the Middle East.
