A Fulton County, Georgia, special grand jury Thursday released a partial report of its investigations into election interference.
The grand jury was impaneled to investigate possible attempts to disrupt the lawful administration of the 2020 general election in Georgia. It was impaneled January 24, 2022, by Fulton County Superior Court Chief Judge Christopher Brasher. It consisted of 26 members, three of whom were alternatives.
Members were selected May 2 and began hearing testimony June 1, according to the grand jury’s released report. Testimony from 75 witnesses continued until December, the report noted.
“The Grand Jury heard extensive testimony on the subject of alleged election fraud from poll workers, investigators, technical experts and State of Georgia employees and officials, as well as from persons still claiming that such fraud took place,” the report explained. “We find by a unanimous vote that no widespread fraud took place in the Georgia 2020 presidential election that could result in overturning that election.”
Former President Donald Trump’s January 2, 2021, telephone call to Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger reportedly sparked Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis to request a grand jury investigation.
“All I want to do is this,” Trump reportedly said to Raffensperger. “I just want to find 11,780 votes, which is one more than we have. Because we won the state.”
The absence of Trump’s name in the publicly released sections of the grand jury report was hailed as proof of innocence by his camp. A Truth post on his account was attributed to campaign spokesman Steven Cheung in an NBC News report.
“The long awaited important sections of the Georgia report, which do not even mention President Trump’s name, have nothing to do with the President because President Trump did absolutely nothing wrong,” Trump’s Truth post declared. “The President participated in two perfect phone calls regarding election integrity in Georgia, which he is entitled to do – in fact, as President, it was President Trump’s Constitutional duty to ensure election safety, security, and integrity.”
In a subsequent post to his Truth page, the former president thanked the grand jury members.
“Thank you to the Special Grand Jury in the Great State of Georgia for your Patriotism & Courage,” Trump remarked. “Total exoneration.”
“The USA is very proud of you!!!”
