In a surprising move that quickly ignited a media firestorm, President Donald Trump shared a series of images on Sunday, including some artificially generated.
These images suggested an endorsement from pop sensation Taylor Swift.
The images were posted on Trump’s Truth Social account, showcasing apparent support from Swift and her dedicated fanbase, the “Swifties,” for his potential 2024 presidential run.
One of the most striking images in the collage was a doctored version of the iconic Uncle Sam recruiting poster, replacing the familiar figure with Swift, adorned in red, white and blue.
The image was alongside the bold caption, “Taylor Swift Wants You To Vote For Donald Trump.”
Trump added his own commentary above the images, stating simply, “I accept!”
Fox News reported that another image, derived from a satirical post by an X user, displayed a headline proclaiming, “Swifties turning to Trump after ISIS foiled Taylor Swift concert,” accompanied by AI-generated pictures of fans wearing “Swifties for Trump” t-shirts.
The former president also shared what appeared to be a genuine photograph of a young woman sporting a “Swifties for Trump” shirt, adding an element of reality to the mix.
Fox highlighted that the posts quickly triggered a widespread reaction across media outlets, with many criticizing Trump for promoting what they described as a false narrative.
NBC News, for example, said that Trump was sharing posts from supporters pushing the concept of a “Swifties for Trump” movement, a phenomenon they described as having little basis in reality.
The Daily Beast labeled the incident part of a “Sunday meltdown” on Trump’s social media, as pointed out by Fox.
The outlet further noted that some outlets took a more direct approach in their criticism.
Teen Vogue headlined their coverage with “Trump Shares Fake AI Taylor Swift ‘Endorsement’,” while The New Republic referred to it as “Trump’s Bizarre A.I. Stunt to Win Taylor Swift’s Endorsement Backfires.”
Rolling Stone echoed the sentiment with a headline reading, “Trump Shares Bogus ‘Swifties for Trump’ Images.”
HuffPost went a step further, suggesting that Trump had been duped by the AI-generated images with their headline: “Trump Falls For AI-Generated Taylor Swift Fans In Kooky Endorsement Claim.”
Forbes highlighted the potential fallout, stating, “Trump Shared Fake Taylor Swift ‘Endorsement’—It Won’t End Well.”
The media’s response was not limited to just coverage.
Democratic Representative Eric Swalwell told CNN that Trump had made a serious error by attempting to “poke the eyes of the Swifties,” referencing the highly dedicated and often politically active fanbase of the pop star.
This sentiment was echoed by some of Swift’s liberal supporters, including members of the “Swifties For Kamala” group, an X-based collective boasting over 62,000 followers that backs Vice President Kamala Harris.
Irene Kim, co-founder of the group, told WIRED, “We do not represent every Swiftie, but I think there is a reason we don’t need AI to show our support for Kamala.”
Trump’s spokesperson, Steven Cheung, responded to the backlash, telling Fox, “Swifties for Trump is a massive movement that grows bigger every single day.”
Cheung also took the opportunity to criticize Harris, saying she was “guilty as sin for all the hurt she has caused every American.”
Fox added that despite the online uproar, Trump has previously acknowledged that Swift is not a supporter of his.
It remains unclear whether his acceptance of the so-called endorsement was meant to be taken seriously or if it was simply a tongue-in-cheek reference to accepting any support he might receive from Swift fans.
Swift herself has not yet endorsed a candidate for the 2024 presidential race, though it is widely believed that she will not back Trump if she does decide to publicly support a candidate.
Fox highlighted that in the past, she has endorsed Democratic candidates, including former Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen and President Joe Biden.
Swift has also been vocal about her support for LGBTQ rights and her opposition to the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.
