Trump Provides Update Regarding Lindsay Clancy Pardon

A constitutional roadblock, not a policy choice, stands between President Donald Trump and any pardon for Lindsay Clancy, the Massachusetts mother accused of murdering her three children.

Reporters caught up with Trump on Sunday as he prepared to board Air Force One, pressing him on a growing public campaign urging clemency for Clancy.

His answer centered less on sympathy and more on the limits of his own office.

“It’s actually a state situation, you know, not a federal,” Trump told the assembled press corps.

That single line effectively ended speculation that a presidential pardon could ever apply to Clancy’s case.

Still, Trump did not dismiss the gravity of the situation before explaining the jurisdictional barrier.

“It’s a very sad situation. I certainly heard that,” he said when first asked about the pardon request.

He then described the case in stark, no-win terms.

“There is no winner there. There’s no win no matter what you do. Three children are dead,” Trump said.

The comments came in direct response to a request from Kevin Reddington, the defense attorney representing Clancy, who has publicly lobbied Trump to step into the case.

A reporter specifically asked whether Trump would call the state prosecutor overseeing Clancy’s case, as Reddington has requested.

Trump sidestepped a direct commitment while offering praise for the attorney making the ask.

“He’s a very good attorney,” Trump said of Reddington.

He then signaled that any resolution would have to come from within the existing legal system.

“I hope they can work it out. That’s something they have to work out. There is no win there,” Trump said.

Reddington’s public appeal came in the immediate aftermath of a mistrial declared in Clancy’s murder case earlier this month.

That trial had captivated national attention as Clancy stood accused of killing her three young children.

Jurors ultimately failed to reach a unanimous verdict, splitting eleven days into deliberations over whether Clancy was guilty of murder or not guilty by reason of insanity.

Twelve of the thirteen jurors reportedly leaned toward finding Clancy not guilty by reason of insanity.

One juror alone refused to budge, insisting on a guilty verdict and forcing the judge to declare a mistrial.

That holdout juror has since become an unlikely public figure, drawing both criticism and financial support online.

A fundraiser organized on his behalf has reportedly climbed past the six-figure mark as supporters rallied around his refusal to change his vote.

Clancy, meanwhile, remains in custody as prosecutors and her defense team weigh how to proceed following the deadlocked jury.

It was against this backdrop that Reddington turned his attention toward the White House, framing his appeal around Clancy’s personal circumstances rather than trial evidence.

“Mr. President, I would hope that you would consider this young lady—the type of person she is and what she’s been through—and consider a pardon,” Reddington said.

The plea placed Trump in the position of publicly weighing in on a case entirely outside his constitutional reach.

Presidential pardons apply exclusively to federal offenses, leaving no legal pathway for Trump to intervene in a state-level murder case like Clancy’s.

Authority over Clancy’s fate rests entirely with Massachusetts prosecutors and the state court system, regardless of any outside appeals.

Prosecutors have not indicated when they will announce whether they intend to retry Clancy on the murder charges.

Trump’s remarks aboard the tarmac closed off one avenue of relief for Clancy’s defense team while leaving the core legal questions in her case unresolved.

The mistrial, the holdout juror, and now the rejected pardon request have combined to keep Clancy’s case in the national spotlight.

Massachusetts officials are expected to determine the next steps in the proceedings in the coming weeks.
