Former President Donald Trump recently commended House Speaker Mike Johnson for releasing extensive footage from the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot.
Trump, expressing his views on Truth Social, praised Johnson’s decision and anticipated that the comprehensive release of the January 6 tapes will transparently reveal the day’s events.
“Congratulations to Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson for having the Courage and Fortitude to release all of the J6 Tapes, which will explicitly reveal what happened on January 6th!” Trump said.
Trump has faced significant challenges since the Capitol riot, including being banned from most social media platforms and facing legal actions from the Department of Justice. He has consistently denied any involvement or prior knowledge of the attack.
In August, Trump was indicted on January 6 conspiracy charges by special counsel Jack Smith, appointed by President Biden. District Court Judge Tanya Chutkan, overseeing the case, has imposed a gag order on Trump, limiting his public commentary on the matter.
The former president hopes that the release of 44,000 hours of footage will provide a clearer picture of the events, countering the narrative presented by mainstream media and the previous Democrat-led House committee. Newly elected House Speaker Johnson fulfilled his promise to release the tapes, a commitment his predecessor, Kevin McCarthy, did not meet. This move has garnered significant praise from Republican politicians and supporters.
Johnson emphasized the importance of transparency in government, stating his commitment to making the footage accessible to the American public.
“To restore America’s trust and faith in their Government we must have transparency. This is another step towards keeping the promises I made when I was elected to be your Speaker,” Johnson said. He also mentioned the establishment of a public viewing room to allow uncensored access to the videos.
The speaker’s team, led by Chairman Loudermilk, is working to process the footage, which involves blurring the faces of private citizens to prevent retaliation and segregating sensitive security information.
The release of these tapes is seen as a critical step in providing a more comprehensive understanding of the January 6 events, which have led to severe consequences for those involved, including long prison sentences and solitary confinement.
