On Monday, former President Donald Trump targeted Cassidy Hutchinson, a major witness for the January 6 committee, after leaked text messages revealed that she referred to the investigation as “B.S.”
In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote, “Lyin’ Cassidy Hutchinson, who the Fake News Media refuses to properly reveal, recently called the January 6 Unselect Committee ‘B.S.’ Gee, that wasn’t reported by LameStream!”
The images of the text conversation between Hutchinson and a redacted individual were published by the Daily Caller a day before Trump’s post on the matter.
“Hey [redacted]! This is Cassidy Hutchinson. Kind of a random question, but do you still work for the Schlapp’s at the ACU?” Hutchinson wrote to an individual, who has only been identified as a “conservative activist.”
Matt Schlapp is the chairman of the American Conservative Union, which maintains the First Amendment Fund, a defense fund for individuals, particularly former Trump officials, who have become involved in the January 6 investigation.
After an affirmation, Hutchinson continued, “Do you happen to know a First Amendment fund [point of contact] I could reach out to? I was subpoenaed in early Nov., but the committee waited to serve me until last week. I had to accept service because the U.S. Marshalls came to my apartment last Wednesday, but I haven’t made contact with the Committee. I’m just on a tight timeline and just trying to figure out what my options are to deal with this bs.”
Much of Hutchinson’s testimony has been placed under scrutiny, particularly from conservative sources. For example, Hutchinson alleged that Trump attempted to grab the steering wheel of a vehicle from a Secret Service agent, and proceeded to assault the agent when he refused to surrender it.
However, the Secret Service has issued a denial and claimed that they were not informed of the allegations before they were aired live.
Hutchinson made another claim that she wrote a statement to Trump that read, “Anyone who entered the Capitol without proper authority should leave immediately.”
But a spokesperson for Eric Herschmann, former White House attorney, claimed that Herschmann had written the note and that multiple people could confirm that claim.
Many conservatives have been left wondering what prompted Hutchinson to change her tune from B.S. to becoming the critical witness of the committee, issuing claims that have been repeatedly contested and are growing further from the truth.
