Former president Donald Trump lashed out against Ron DeSantis on Wednesday, taking to Truth Social to deliver a tirade against the Florida governor while DeSantis announced his presidential campaign.
On Wednesday afternoon, DeSantis joined a Twitter Space hosted by venture capitalist David Sacks and featuring Elon Musk in order to announce what many have expected for months: that he would throw his hat in the ring to become the presidential nominee.
Trump, however, was not impressed by the Florida governor’s big announcement, and he made no secret of his disdain for his most recent primary opponent, lashing out against DeSantis on Truth Social for several hours both during and after the technically challenged Twitter Space.
“I’d like to personally congratulate ‘Rob’ DeSanctimonious on finally announcing that he will be entering the race for President of the United States,” Trump said.
“Hopefully he will get the full experience of being attacked by the Marxists, Communists, and Radical Left Lunatics of our Country, without which he will never know the kind of job he is doing. These Lowlifes & Misfits are far worse than the leaders of hostile foreign countries. They must be soundly defeated in order to MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
Trump went on to quip, “His collar is too big!” seemingly belittling DeSantis’ fashion choices, and gloated over his opponent’s poll numbers, which Trump claims have “tanked” throughout the year.
DeSantis’ support has indeed fallen in FiveThirtyEight’s aggregate of national polls, falling from a high of around 30% in March to a little over 20% at this writing.
Trump continued his attack on DeSantis, teasing two new videos about the Florida governor before posting two brand-new attack ads.
In the videos, Trump claims credit for “rescuing” DeSantis’ political career in the 2018 Florida gubernatorial primary, noting that DeSantis was trailing primary opponent Adam Putnam by as much as 17% prior to Trump’s endorsement.
The former president continued his attack by cracking a joke about his command of the nuclear launch code during his presidency, implying that he would soon become president again and resume a purported friendship with North Korean supreme leader Kim Jong Un.
“‘Rob,’ My Red Button is bigger, better, stronger, and is working (TRUTH!), yours does not! (per my conversation with Kim Jung Un, of North Korea, soon to become my friend!),” Trump said.
The former president capped off his tirade by releasing a third video, one which humorously juxtaposed the enthusiastic crowds of his own campaign launch against the at-first failure to launch Twitter space in which DeSantis announced his bid for the Oval Office.
While the contest between the two leading Republicans is only just getting started, it is clear that Trump has wasted no time going on the attack, delivering a message of scorn and ridicule against the leading Republican challenger to Trump’s throne.
