In a follow-up to a story previously published by RTM, Trump is rejecting as “fake news” reports that he is struggling to find “top-flight attorneys to represent him,” according to the New York Post.
Trump specifically called out the Washington Post for claiming that he is having difficulty enlisting attorneys and staff, particularly since the FBI’s raid on his home in Mar-a-Lago.
Trump took to his Truth Social platform to express his concerns:
“The WAPO story that ‘Trump is scrambling to add seasoned lawyers’ to the Mar-a-Lago Raid case is, as usual, FAKE NEWS. I already have excellent and experienced lawyers – am very happy with them.”
Trump added: “This is highly political prosecutorial misconduct. I have not been charged with anything and, most importantly, I did nothing wrong. Thank you!”
The Washington Post reported Tuesday that Trump and his aides have been searching for “expert legal advicors …but have come up empty-handed.”
The WAPO article quoted a prominent Republican who reportedly said: “Everyone is saying no,” adding that Trump is “struggling” to find a “veteran defense lawyer” with experience dealing with the Justice Department.
According to the New York Post, David Schoen, one of the attorneys who represented Trump in his second Senate impeachment trial, told CNN he had been “approached a couple months ago about being a liaison with the Justice Department.”
Schoen continued: “It wasn’t for me, it doesn’t suit my skill set. I wasn’t particularly interested in that.”
Attempting to note that his decision was not personal, Schoen said: “It’s not my — not my skill set to sift through boxes and sort of liaison with the Justice Department. I’m hired generally when a case is going to trial or appeal to argue the case and to cross-examine witnesses. So, that’s my skill set at least.”
The Washington Post also claimed that advisers close to Trump are “extremely worried” that the current legal team lacks the experience to provide an adequate defense for the beleaguered former president.
Providing an alternate view, according to the New York Post, Schoen said:
“I had some of the greatest lawyers in the country willing to help me prepare for the impeachment. But there are some people who at that time had been around President Trump, giving advice and vetting lawyers and wanting to go insinuate themselves into the situation, who I think gave bad advice. And so in this case, they nixed some of these people because they hadn’t been vetted by them and so on, sort of making themselves too self-important.”
A Trump spokesman denied reports of deficiencies in their legal team, noting that former federal prosecutors Evan Corcoran and James Trusty would lead in addressing legal challenges brought against the former president.
Trump spokesman Taylor Budowich said:
“The President’s lead counsel in relation to the raid of his home, Jim Trusty and Evan Corcoran, have decades of prosecutorial experience and have litigated some of the most complex cases in American history.”
Budowich added: “President Trump is represented by some of the strongest attorneys in the country, and any suggestion otherwise is only driven by envy.”
