Nikki Haley is a rising star in the GOP. Her notable leadership as governor of South Carolina and as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations gives her impressive credentials and the unction to be the second GOP candidate to declare their intent to run for president in 2024.
Reports indicate Haley is expecting to announce her candidacy on Feb. 15.
Last April, Haley, a strong Trump supporter, told reporters she would not run for president if Trump decided to run again.
“I would not run if President Trump ran,” she told reporters at the time, “and I would talk to him about it.”
Trump declared his candidacy in mid-November.
Haley reportedly has taken the high road and contacted the former president to discuss her thoughts on becoming a candidate.
Last weekend, Trump indicated that Haley has his blessing to throw her hat into the ring. While en route to a campaign stop last Saturday, Trump shared the following with reporters on his plane:
“[Nikki] called me and said she’d like to consider it, and I said, ‘You should do it,'” according to CBS News.
“I talked to her for a little while,” Trump added. “I said, ‘Look, you know, go by your heart if you want to run.'”
The Charleston’s Post and Courier reported on Haley’s forthcoming announcement:
“Cementing what has been in the works for months … Haley will formally announce she is running for president and will seek the Republican nomination for her party’s 2024 ticket.”
Reportedly, Haley has invited supporters to attend an event in Charleston on Feb. 15 to hear a “special announcement.”
Fox News reported that Haley indicated in January that she was seriously contemplating a run despite her previous statement regarding not running against Trump.
“Well, when you’re looking at a run for president,” Haley said, “you look at two things. You first look at, does the current situation push for new leadership. The second question is, am I that person that could be that new leader?”
Haley has indicated in various speeches and posts that inflation, foreign policy and a variety of problems tied to the economy will be her key platform points.
When she considered her passions and capabilities, Haley asked herself? “Can I be that leader? Yes, I think I can be that leader,” Haley told Fox News.
“I think it’s time for new generational change,” Haley added. “I don’t think you need to be 80 years old to go be a leader in D.C. … I think we need a young generation to come in, step up, and really start fixing things.”
