Trump Says ‘You Shouldn’t be Here’ to American Nemesis as He Arrives at UN

A single command echoed across the United Nations plaza Tuesday, delivered by President Donald Trump to a shouting reporter chasing him for comment on Russia’s war machine.

“Settle the war,” Trump said, spinning around briefly before disappearing into the U.N. building.

That terse instruction capped off a chaotic arrival at the General Assembly, one that began with the president publicly dressing down CNN’s Kaitlan Collins in front of a crowd of journalists and cameras.

Melania Trump walked beside her husband as the pair made their way toward the entrance, pausing only long enough for the president to field a burst of shouted questions.

Collins seized the moment to ask about the war involving Iran, a subject Trump has fielded repeatedly in recent weeks amid mounting global pressure.

Rather than answer, Trump turned the moment into a rebuke of the network itself, questioning why its correspondent was even present.

“You shouldn’t be here,” he told her flatly.

He pressed further, framing CNN’s presence as a contradiction of its own stated position. “It’s an honor to be here, I’m surprised that CNN is here covering me,” Trump said, before adding, “You said you weren’t gonna cover me, you shouldn’t be covering me.”

The clash represents merely the newest flare-up in a feud stretching back years between Trump and Collins, one that has played out repeatedly during White House briefings and campaign events alike.

This time, however, the tension carries added weight. Just four days before the U.N. encounter, Trump moved to strip CNN, along with MS NOW and Politico, of their White House access entirely, pointing to what he called a sustained pattern of slanted coverage.

Security personnel physically blocked correspondents from those three outlets from entering White House grounds over the weekend that followed the announcement.

The three organizations did not stay quiet. A federal lawsuit landed Monday, arguing that the administration’s move trampled constitutional protections tied to free speech and fair process.

Ripples from the ban spread quickly through the broader press corps. Five major networks — ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox News and NBC — pulled out of the White House’s rotating television pool arrangement after CNN found itself shut out of a pool assignment it was scheduled to cover.

None of that domestic turmoil touched Trump’s U.N. itinerary, since credentialing for the international summit operates through an entirely separate system unconnected to White House press rules.

Diplomacy, not media warfare, technically topped the day’s agenda.

Trump arrived in New York facing a packed schedule of leader meetings alongside his General Assembly remarks, with the wars gripping Iran and Ukraine looming over nearly every conversation.

One name surfaced repeatedly ahead of the speech: Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed Tuesday that Trump had not ruled out a face-to-face sitdown with him during the overlapping New York visit.

Rubio framed the president’s openness to such talks as a broader philosophy rather than a one-off gesture.

“This is a president that will meet with anybody for the most part, because he believes that engaging with people is important if you’re going to solve problems,” Rubio told NBC’s Today show audience.

He tempered that openness with a caveat, noting that dialogue doesn’t guarantee resolution. “It doesn’t mean you’re going to end up agreeing with them, but it’s important,” Rubio said.

Behind the scenes, White House aides previewed a speech built around a central argument: that Trump’s use of American military and economic leverage has directly addressed dangerous flashpoints across the globe.

Mike Waltz, serving as Trump’s ambassador to the United Nations, laid out that framing for reporters covering the summit’s opening day.

“We expect the president will highlight how he has and his administration have confronted complex problems head-on around the world,” Waltz said.

Beyond the prepared remarks, aides expected Trump to touch on the Iran standoff, Russia’s continuing assault on Ukraine, and a string of scheduled sitdowns with leaders from both Europe and the Middle East.

By the time Trump vanished through the U.N.’s doors, the day had already delivered a media confrontation, a diplomatic preview and a two-word ultimatum aimed squarely at Moscow — leaving reporters with plenty to unpack before he ever reached the podium.
