President Donald Trump warned Friday that recent victories by progressive candidates in New York City’s Democratic primary elections represent a significant threat to the country, arguing the results underscore what he described as the Democratic Party’s continued shift to the left ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
Speaking before thousands of attendees at the Faith and Freedom Coalition’s annual Road to Majority conference in Washington, Trump criticized the rise of candidates backed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, whose endorsed candidates secured several primary victories earlier this week.
“These ruthless communists will attack all religions, but in particular Christianity,” Trump told the audience.
“This is the greatest threat to our country since its founding,” he added.
Trump’s remarks followed primary victories by three progressive candidates supported by Mamdani, including two members of the Democratic Socialists of America. Republicans have pointed to the election results as evidence that the Democratic Party is becoming increasingly aligned with its progressive wing heading into November.
During his speech, Trump argued the movement represents more than a debate over economic policy.
At one point, he described communists as “animals” who would assassinate political opponents, though he did not provide evidence supporting that assertion.
The president delivered the remarks at the Washington Hilton, the same hotel where authorities say an armed man attempted to breach security during the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner in April.
The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen of California, has pleaded not guilty to charges alleging he attempted to assassinate the president. Security at Friday’s event was visibly heightened, with additional personnel stationed throughout the venue.
Republicans have increasingly highlighted the New York primary results as they prepare campaign messaging for the midterm elections, arguing that Democratic candidates are embracing policies that fall outside the political mainstream while voters remain focused on issues such as inflation, housing affordability and the economy.
The candidates backed by Mamdani defeated two incumbent House Democrats and another candidate supported by the Democratic establishment.
While Republicans often describe Democratic Socialists as communists, democratic socialism generally advocates expanding government-run social programs through democratic elections rather than replacing democratic institutions.
Many candidates associated with the movement support universal health care, tuition-free public college, expanded child care, stronger labor protections, and higher taxes on wealthy Americans, per Conservative Brief.
Democrats rejected Trump’s characterization.
Aidan Johnson, a spokesman for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, accused Republicans of attempting to distract voters from substantive issues.
“Know they can’t win on the issues, so we’re seeing them melt down in real time, resorting to ineffective boogeyman attacks,” Johnson said.
Trump also defended his administration’s handling of Iran during the speech, telling attendees his administration had prevented Tehran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.
The Faith and Freedom Coalition conference remains one of the Republican Party’s largest annual gatherings of evangelical Christians and conservative activists, with Trump using the event to preview campaign themes Republicans are expected to emphasize leading into the 2026 midterm elections.
