A grass-court battle at one of London’s most traditional tennis venues ended with an unexpected twist this week, as the postmatch interview overshadowed the match itself.
Frenchman Corentin Moutet had just clawed his way through a brutal three-set contest at Queen’s Club, edging out countryman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard by a score of 6-7(5), 6-4, 7-6(5).
Queen’s Club has long served as one of the traditional proving grounds for players preparing for Wimbledon, lending the venue a certain old-world prestige. None of that prestige carried over once the cameras turned to Moutet for his on-court interview.
Mpetshi Perricard ranks among the tour’s most punishing servers, a fact that became the focal point of the interview when BBC broadcaster Jenny Drummond pressed Moutet about facing a 142 mph delivery at a pivotal match point.
Moutet wasted no time unloading his frustration. “That’s so frustrating, you know,” he said. “When I had match point, I was on the second serve. OK, you aim in the middle, whatever you do, just put the ball in the court.”
His recollection of the moment escalated quickly from there. “And then he hits me 142 and I was like, ‘f–k.’”
Laughter rippled through the crowd almost immediately, and Moutet’s own expression suggested he realized the slip the instant it happened.
Drummond tried to regain control of the interview in real time. “No F-bombs please,” she warned him, clearly hoping to prevent a repeat.
Instead of correcting course, Moutet seized the microphone again and unleashed the same word several more times in quick succession, much to the delight of the now-roaring crowd.
Drummond had no choice but to physically pull the microphone out of his reach as the live segment teetered on the edge of collapse.
A brief attempt was made to continue the interview, but Moutet slipped right back into the same expletive, forcing producers to cut the segment short entirely.
Back in the studio, BBC host Clare Balding stepped in to offer a formal apology to the broadcast’s audience for the unfiltered language that had aired live.
Rather than shy away from the fallout, Moutet leaned into it. He later posted a comment beneath the tournament’s official Instagram recap of the moment, brushing off the entire ordeal.
“I was just joking I hope you guys didn’t get offended,” he wrote. “Thanks for the love.”
The lighthearted response, however, may not be the final word on the matter.
ATP regulations allow for fines against players who use audible obscenities anywhere on tournament grounds, meaning Moutet could still face financial consequences from the tour despite his casual dismissal of the incident.
Tennis officials have not yet indicated whether a penalty will be issued.
What got lost in the viral aftermath was the quality of tennis that preceded it. Beating one of the sport’s most fearsome servers on a slick grass surface represents a genuine accomplishment, especially with Wimbledon just weeks away.
At 27 years old, Moutet now turns his attention to his next opponent at Queen’s Club, Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, in a matchup that will carry far less media baggage than his last appearance on court.
Beyond that contest, the bigger prize awaits. Wimbledon’s grass courts open later this month, and Moutet will look to translate his Queen’s Club form into a deep run at the All England Club.
For the BBC, the incident may prompt a second look at how live interviews are handled going forward, particularly when players are still riding the adrenaline of a hard-fought win.
The clip, meanwhile, has continued to spread well beyond tennis circles, turning a routine grass-court victory into one of the more talked-about moments of the European tennis season.
