A cushion stained with blood. An armrest broken off a metal bench. Those details anchor a police report on a Saturday-evening fall at an apartment complex in Athens, Georgia.
The report, obtained by The Post, describes how University of Georgia senior Kristin Sargent, 21, dropped from an eighth-floor window at The Rambler on West Broad Street.
She landed on the building’s pool deck. Her father says she now recovers in intensive care.
The emergency happened shortly after 7:30 p.m. Officer Erik Ellison wrote that dispatchers sent police to the building at approximately 7:37 p.m.
Ellison found Sargent on the ground near the pool. The complex places that pool in a courtyard on the second floor, so she fell from the eighth floor to the second.
Bystanders gave the officer their account before anyone else did.
“I arrived and spoke with bystanders who advised that the female victim had been dancing on a couch or air mattress which was near an open window and had apparently fallen through the screen and onto the ground below,” he wrote.
Ellison then turned his attention to the bench.
“It appeared from the scene that the victim had struck a metal bench as she fell, as the cushion on the bench had some blood on it, and the armrest of the bench had broken off,” he wrote.
Witnesses also told authorities that a lounge chair may have broken her fall, according to reports.
The investigation moved to the hospital next.
Ellison wrote that officers interviewed Sargent and other witnesses there, and that the information they gathered suggested an accident.
Forensic technicians processed the scene, and the investigation remained ongoing when the officer filed his report.
His assessment of her condition was short. “At this time it appears that the victim will survive,” he wrote.
The Sargent family learned of the fall by phone at their home in Virginia.
A caller told them, “Oh my God, Kristin’s had a tough fall,” her father, Richard Sargent, said. The family hurried out the door.
Richard Sargent later told Channel 2 Action News that his daughter has spoken with friends since the fall. “She was talking to one of her friends and saying, ‘Hey, I’m alive. I can’t believe it’,” he said.
Reports say the fall left Kristin Sargent with several broken bones.
Her father described her condition plainly, saying she is “pretty badly beaten up.” He added that the family is “lucky that she’s alive and we’re blessed.”
“She’s a good fighter, and so she’s going to be OK,” Richard Sargent said.
Richard Sargent did not say what led to the fall. He did point to the date. The Georgia Bulldogs had beaten the Oklahoma Sooners 41-13 on Saturday.
“University of Georgia just won a football game,” he said. “I bet there was a lot of kids here who are 21 years old who were super happy.”
Kristin Sargent studies finance and marketing at the university. She stands 5-foot-7 and weighs 115 pounds, according to the police report.
The Rambler’s management addressed the incident in a message to residents.
Channel 2 reported that the notice said the complex has safety limiters installed on its windows. It also told residents not to “tamper with, remove or disengage” the devices.
Authorities have not said whether the window Sargent fell from had a limiter engaged, or whether the device played any role, according to the station.
Management also told residents that it is cooperating with investigators.
A Rambler Athens representative sent The Post a statement.
“Our thoughts are with our resident, and we are wishing for a speedy recovery. We are continuing to gather information and review the circumstances surrounding the incident.”
Inside the building, friends and fellow students have filled a large poster with dozens of well wishes for Sargent.
