Rep Angie Craig (D-MN) was a victim of an assault on Thursday morning. Craig’s office announced that the congresswoman was attacked in an elevator at her apartment building.
A statement from Craig’s office read:
“This morning around 7:15 a.m., Rep. Craig was assaulted in the elevator of her apartment building in Washington, DC. Rep. Craig defended herself from the attacker and suffered bruising but is otherwise physically okay.”
The statement added: “Rep. Craig called 9-1-1 and the assailant fled the scene of the assault. There is no evidence that the incident was politically motivated.”
The statement concluded, “Rep. Craig is grateful to the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department for their quick response and asks for privacy at this time.”
Craig joins the list of several other congressional representatives who have reported being victims of violent crimes in recent years. Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon (D-PA) was carjacked in Philadelphia in December 2021. Police recovered the car and arrested two suspects.
In January 2022, a car belonging to Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO) was hit by gunfire. Rep. Bush was not in the vehicle at the time.
In 2022, the Washington, D.C., City Council passed legislation eliminating mandatory minimum sentencing guidelines for those perpetrating violent crimes. The now Republican-controlled House of Representatives recently rejected a similar legislation proposal.
