One mark of a great athlete is their care for, and interaction with, their fans. Former tennis pro Alicia Molik of Australia is a great athlete.
Showing extraordinary concern and quick thinking, Molik jumped into action when she noticed a young girl had collapsed on a nearby court.
Molik, a former top 10 player and two-time grand slam doubles champion was being honored as the new Adelaide International tournament director in a special on-court ceremony in Australia when she noticed the sound of someone hitting the ground on the court behind her.
In turning to see what had happened, Molik noticed a young girl, named Jasmine, had collapsed on the court behind her.
Breaking away from the live feed, Molik ran to the unconscious girl to see how she could lend aid.
The Advertiser reported that Jasmine had been playing on the court for several hours before collapsing. Molik quickly checked to ensure her airway was clear and administered general first aid.
Molik stayed with the girl until emergency personnel arrived. Jasmine is now recovering at a local hospital.
The New York Post reported that for the last 10 years, Molik had captained Billie Jean King’s Cup team, which represents Australia in international women’s tennis.
During her time at the helm, the team moved from No. 4 in the world in Sam Stosur to the No. 1 position.
During the ceremony marking Molik’s new role as Adelaide International tournament director, the former pro said: “Tennis is part of my everyday DNA and to have the opportunity to be a part of a world-class tennis event in the city where I grew up is really something special.”
Molik added: “This is a chance for me to give back to the community that supported me throughout my on-court career and still to this day.”
