Recent polls show that President Joe Biden’s approval rating has hit a record low.
Generally friendly Washington Post reporter David Ignatius put another hole in what appears to be Biden’s sinking ship by telling MSNBC he is “still very concerned about President Biden’s age.”
Ignatius’ comments were shared on Monday during MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” program when he asked to comment on last Thursday’s MSNBC interview with First Lady Jill Biden, who assured listeners her husband is fit and ready to complete a second term.
Ignatius responded to the first lady’s comments by suggesting in his weekend column that due to age, health and mental fitness concerns, the president should not run in 2024.
MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski challenged Ignatius about his concerns. Drawing on the first lady’s assertions that Biden is fit for office and suggesting that Biden has done a good job “managing” important issues on “the world stage,” he asked Ignatius:
“When you look at how [Biden’s] managing the world stage, and you hear Dr. Biden’s argument that he knows everybody, he’s been there done that. Any response, any update to your point of view?”
Ignatius responded by gently disputing Brzezinski’s assessment of Biden’s leadership on the “world stage” and discounted the weight of the first lady’s comments.
“So, as I wrote … many of President Biden’s policies, I think are good. I think he’s done a very good job of handling this extraordinarily difficult war in Gaza … [but] the American public does seem to be concerned about his age.”
Ignatius added, “but that’s not you or me saying it, it’s a feeling it’s out there in the public, the polls consistently show that. And the best thing he can do is to demonstrate that he’s a strong leader with a strong team, and is the best person not simply to beat — to beat Trump but — but to lead the world in a very difficult period.”
Regarding the public’s growing concern about Biden’s health and mental fitness, Ignatius said, “I haven’t lost my concern nor has the public.”
An August Associated Press/NORC poll found that 77% of voters believed the president is too old to serve a second term. A September CNN poll found that 72% of Americans said the “President inspires confidence as a leader of the country” does not apply to Biden.
Some believe the increased number of negative reports on Biden’s health, age or mental fitness on generally left-leaning media platforms are designed to condition Americans for a coming “change of batter” in advance of the 2024 election.
