Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) faced a hostile crowd in her district at an event on Wednesday evening. When a group of angry constituents began shouting, “AOC has got to go,” the congresswoman sat on the stage and appeared to mock the protesters by smiling and rocking back and forth to their chants.
A video of the event was posted online; it shows AOC smirking, bouncing her shoulders and drinking a bottle of water as protesters, led by a bongo drum beat, chanted their displeasure:
“Very classy, thank you sir,” she says in the video, pointing at someone in the crowd who had presumably heckled her.
This is the second time in two weeks that AOC has faced angry constituents — reportedly because the two-time congresswoman voted with President Biden and Speaker Pelosi-led Democrats who pushed the latest multi-billion dollar spending bill to provide military aid to Ukraine.
Last week, constituents confronted AOC as she was hosting a town hall meeting at a Bronx high school for residents of the Congressional District 14. Video of that encounter has tallied more than seven million views in a week:
“Congresswoman! None of this matters unless there’s a nuclear war, which you voted to send arms and weapons to Ukraine,” one protester shouts at AOC in the video.
Hecklers called AOC a “coward,” noting that Democratic Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, who last week announced she had left the party due to its newfound hawkishness, “has shown guts where you’ve shown cowardice.”
Other protesters demanded that AOC follow Gabbard’s lead and denounce the Democratic Party.
FreedomNews.TV reported that AOC’s latest run-in with protesters occurred in the Queens neighborhood of Astoria, noting that protesters “were angry about rising crime, LGBTQ+ community housing, and vaccine mandates.”
In an effort to bring the room to order, event coordinators turned the lights off, and AOC was ushered out of the room. The congresswoman returned a short time later, saying, “I’m not allowed to be in a room with the lights turned off.”
Ocasio-Cortez’ congressional seat is on the line as the November midterms approach. The 33-year-old self-proclaimed socialist has met fierce criticism in recent weeks as constituents claim “she has abandoned some of her far-Left principles since going to Washington,” according to the Daily Wire.
The Daily Wire notes that “although her 14th District seat appears safe, Ocasio-Cortez faces a challenge from Bronx business owner Tina Forte.”
Forte presents herself as a moderate Democrat — “fiscally conservative and socially liberal.” She has argued that “AOC has spent her time raising taxes, bad-mouthing business owners, and pushing away large employers like Amazon — denying thousands of jobs to New Yorkers and harming our economy.”
