Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) criticized Florida Governor Ron DeSantis this week for his comments about not allowing Palestinian refugees from Gaza to come into the country.
“I don’t know what Biden’s gonna do, but we cannot accept people from Gaza into this country as refugees,” DeSantis told supporters at a rally in Iowa on Saturday. “I am not going to do that. If you look at how they behave, not all of them are Hamas, but they are all anti-Semitic. None of them believe in Israel’s right to exist.”
DeSantis noted that “none of the Arab states are willing to take any of them” and that those countries are the ones that should ultimately be responsible for helping them.
Ocasio-Cortez joined CNN where she said that Arab nations not wanting to accept Palestinian refugees “does not abdicate the United States from our historic role that we have played in the world of accepting refugees and allowing people to restart their lives here.”
“And I also want to address something very specific about what Governor DeSantis said when he said, ‘all Gazans are anti-Semitic,’” she continued. “How incredibly destructive and dangerous that rhetoric is.”
She said that his remarks were “reckless and no leader in the United States of America should be amplifying a message like that.”
