While speaking at an event on Monday, President Joe Biden appeared to forget the name of Martin Luther King Jr.’s daughter-in-law while singing “Happy Birthday” to her.
While the 80-year-old president addressed the National Action Network run by Al Sharpton, Martin Luther King III and his wife, Arndrea Waters King, he began to speak directly to King.
“Martin the third, we celebrate a legacy of your beloved father and mother. They worked for the beloved community. But congratulations today to the honorees including your wife, who I understand it’s her birthday today?” Biden said.
“Well look, my wife has a rule in our family, when it’s someone’s birthday, you sing ‘Happy Birthday,’” Biden continued. “You ready?”
“Happy Birthday to you. Happy Birthday to you. Happy Birthday dear [inaudible], Happy Birthday to you,” Biden sang, replacing Waters King’s name with a mumble and moving on.
Biden also used the event, which was left-leaning in nature, to attack Republicans and second amendment advocates, calling Republicans “fiscally demented” and reiterating his claims that Second Amendment advocates would need more than an “AR-15” in a potential revolt against the federal government.
Those remarks were made in reference to House Republicans pulling funding that Democrats had passed to hire 87,000 new IRS agents.
“They’re going to talk about big spending Democrats again,” Biden said, adding, “There’s gonna be hundreds of billions reduced over the next decade, but so what? These guys are the fiscally — well, they’re fiscally demented, I think. They don’t quite get it.”
“You know, all these new IRS agents we have is because they fired a lot of them and a lot are retiring. And guess what? Who needs serious agents to know what they’re doing or not doing? The billionaires, the multi-multi-millionaires,” Biden said. “And according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, this one bill alone will add $114 billion to the deficit.”
Biden’s message for Second Amendment advocates came after he called for limitations on the number of rounds of ammunition in weapon magazines.
“Ban the number of bullets that go in a magazine. There’s no, no need for any of that. I love my right-wing friends who talk about ‘the tree of liberty is watered with the blood of patriots,’” Biden said. “If you need to worry about taking on the federal government, you need some F-15s. You don’t need any AR-15. I’m serious. Think about it.”
In June 2021, Biden garnered criticism after making similar comments at a press conference, saying “The Second Amendment from the day it was passed, limited the type of people who could own a gun and what type of weapon you could own. You couldn’t buy a cannon. [Those who] say the blood of the, the blood of patriots, you know, and all this stuff about how we’re going to have to move against the government.”
Biden took flak after his claim that cannons were unavailable for purchase was proven to be demonstrably false by many experts, with the Washington Post later labeling the claim as false.
“Well, the tree of liberty is not [watered with] the blood of patriots, what’s happened is that there never been, if you want, if you think you need to have weapons to take on the government, you need F-15s and maybe some nuclear weapons. The point is that there’s always been the ability to limit, rationally limit, the type of weapon that can be owned, and who can own it,” he continued.
