A Los Alamitos School District Board of Education President’s hot mic expletive and disparaging statement on Tuesday adds to the growing tension between parents and school board officials.
Recently, parents have railed against the introduction of critical race theory curriculum in Virginia, and protested against Attorney General Merrick Garland’s directive granting authority to the FBI to investigate parents who voice their opposition to school board policies and curriculum decisions.
These tension points are in addition to anger from teachers’ unions pushing for the closure of schools, and a California school district forcing students to eat lunch outside in the rain due to COVID-19 restrictions.
This backdrop of controversy made Tuesday’s remark by school board president Marlys Davidson particularly potent.
The remark was caught on a live microphone, referred to as a “hot mic,” during a school board meeting after parent Lauren Roupoli expressed her concerns regarding mask mandates for children.
Davidson’s comment included a rebuke to the board for denouncing parents who spoke up and expressed their concerns.
“F*** you,” the school board president said as the gavel slammed.
The off-color comment from Davidson came after the audience applauded Roupoli’s comments.
Amid demands for her resignation, Davidson offered an apology.
KTLA reports this statement from Davidson:
“I am deeply sorry for the inappropriate comment that I made in last night’s board meeting. I am going to personally apologize to the speaker who most certainly deserves to know that when the members of the public address the Board of Education, they must be heard with respect. These are trying times, but trying times demand that we rise to do our best. I reaffirm my commitment to serve our community with dignity and integrity, and I hope they will accept my sincere apology.”
However, Roupoli has not been quick to accept that apology.
“After her true colors showed last night, there’s no taking that back,” Roupoli said.
