A case Donald Trump claims is rife with political bias and baseless charges advanced today with a court appearance that featured the former president and New York Attorney General Letitia James.
James is an avowed anti-Trumper who campaigned in 2022 on promises to prosecute the former president.
The Daily Caller reported that reporters and cameras were “briefly allowed in the New York Supreme Court” as former President Trump, his lead attorney Alina Habba, and James entered the building and took their places.
The Caller highlighted that James, who sat rows behind Trump and on the opposite side of the room, was noted “seemingly not breaking her stare at the former president.”
Fox News reported that Trump will likely use video of the court proceedings, which showed the judge and several members of the prosecution team smiling and James glaring at Trump, to his advantage.
“Viewers will either be enraged or will be thrilled,” commented a Fox reporter.
Charges against Trump include falsifying or exaggerating his personal net worth to secure favorable interest rates and investors in building his business empire in New York City.
James brought forward a formal case against Trump in September of 2022.
RTM reported that without a jury trial, Democratic Judge Arthur Engoron ruled last week that Trump was guilty of inflating his net worth as James alleged. Trump was fined and his business licenses and certifications were suspended — prohibiting him from conducting business in the City.
Engoron’s ruling has been scrutinized and criticized by many — particularly his valuation of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate, which Trump valued at over $1 billion and Engoron valued at $18 million.
Trump’s attorneys will challenge Engoron’s ruling. Before entering the courtroom on Monday, Trump told reports the trial was a “scam” — a “sham.”
Speaking at the courthouse to reporters, Trump said:
“This is a continuation of the single greatest witch hunt of all time. It’s a scam. It’s a sham. In the meantime, people are being murdered all over the sidewalks of New York.”
Trump claimed the proceedings are a “witch hunt,” led by a “rogue judge” and a “racist Attorney General … who ran for office on the basis that she was going to get Trump before she even knew anything about me.”
