Fox News White House correspondent Peter Doocy is known for having fiery and sometimes comical exchanges with President Joe Biden and White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.
On Thursday, Doocy’s direct question to President Joe Biden about his slipping poll numbers elicited a testy reply.
Following recent polls that showed Biden losing support in most swing states, Doocy asked the president: “Why do you think it is that you’re trailing Trump in all these swing state polls?”
Biden attempted to respond by repeating claims that reporters do not read or correctly understand polling data. Biden said: “Because you don’t read the polls [inaudible]. There’s ten polls, [in] eight of them I’m beating [Trump] in those states. Eight of them. You guys [Fox News] only do two, CNN and New York Times.”
Biden challenged Doocy: “Check it out. Check it out. We will get you copies of all those polls, okay?”
However, a check of the facts shows that most national polls show Biden losing to Trump in five of six swing states. A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll shows Trump leading Biden in the battleground states of Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
CNN released a poll on Monday showing Trump leading Biden by four points in a hypothetical head-to-head match-up and a repeat of the 2020 election. Political pundits are quick to interject that if an Independent enters the race, Trump’s margin of victory increases.
Nathan Klein, a pollster for OnMessage Inc., told the Daily Caller:
“[Trump] can absolutely win a general election, that has always been true, and his odds get better every day Joe Biden is president. The positive movement for Trump we’ve been seeing in the presidential race seems real. I wouldn’t go as far as to say Trump has an outright advantage yet, as many of the swing state polling leads are within the margin of error.
Klein added: “Trump certainly is experiencing a bump, helped by some political environment factors and the current perception of the incumbent president. Nearly 70% of Americans feel like our country is on the wrong track, and Biden’s approval rating sits around just 40%.”
On Thursday, a reporter followed up on Doocy’s question by asking the president: “You don’t believe you’re trailing in battleground states?”
Biden responded, “No.”
Democrat leaders are reportedly worried about 2024 election projections. The Daily Caller cited a Washington Post report noting that “Democrats are worried that the president’s re-election campaign is ignoring the polls and potential political warning signs.”
With subpoenas and impeachment proceedings on the horizon, Democratic Sen. Richard Blumenthal said: “I am concerned. I was concerned before these numbers. I am concerned by the inexplicable credibility that Donald Trump seems to have despite all of the indictments, the lies, the incredible wrongdoing.”
