Two tennis commentators argued about a tennis player’s decision against getting vaccinated against COVID-19, according to a Fox News report.
John McEnroe and Chris Fowler disagreed over Serbian player Novak Djokovic’s deportation from Australia last year as they discussed his latest Grand Slam win.
Djokovic won the Australian Open Sunday in straight sets over Stefanos Tsitsipas to earned his 22nd career Grand Slam title. The win ties him with Rafael Nadal among male players.
McEnroe and Fowler recapped Djokovic’s experiences over the last two years, causing an awkward exchange over the Serbian’s deportation. His choice to not get vaccinated against the coronavirus and his unvaccinated status that led to Australian authorities deporting him last year was also discussed, according to the report..
The Fox report added Djokovic was able to enter the country earlier this month without any issues, avoiding further controversy.
“He gets deported out of Australia. Doesn’t get any points at Wimbledon,” McEnroe said. “Can’t play the [U.S.] Open.”
Fowler interjected, “A part of his choices, to be fair. He made choices that led to that for some of those things.”
“I don’t think,” McEnroe responded, “I think he should have been committed to play.”
“OK, well that’s a debate,” Fowler countered. “He did make choices that led to that. … But that’s forgot for the moment.”
McEnroe advocates that Djokovic should be allowed to play in tennis tournaments despite his vaccination status.
“Well, first of all, I think it’s BS. That’s what I think,” McEnroe told Fox News during the 2022 U.S. Open. “I think he should be allowed to play. My personal opinion, as I’ve been vaccinated, I had a booster shot, that’s up to the individual.”
“If I were him, and I’m not him, he’s won a lot more majors than me probably because he’s dug in his heels and found the gear, that will, that very few people in any sport have ever found, so that’s part of what’s made him so great, he sticks to his guns,” McEnroe continued. “He’s perfectly entitled to make the decision.”
