Former President Donald Trump’s Saturday political rally in friendly Waco, Texas, has received mixed reviews.
The unusually poor assessment stems from his attempts to move forward in the polls by belittling opponents and his focus on the Jan. 6, 2021, protest and breach of the Capitol.
Trump is receiving pushback for his repeated personal attacks on rising star Gov. Ron DeSantis. Last Saturday, when mocking the Florida governor, his comments were met with piercing silence from the otherwise energetic crowd.
Host Brian Kilmeade of Fox News criticized Trump for keeping Jan. 6, 2021, events in the spotlight. The veteran host noted that the rally opened with the “Justice for All” song being presented by the J6 prison choir, which includes individuals jailed for their role in the Jan. 6 Capitol breach.
Kilmeade lamented that while the song played over the loudspeakers, a montage of images from Jan. 6 flashed across a large screen.

The Fox News host expressed dismay at what occurred, saying, “The former president of the United States opened up with Jan. 6 video, which is insane.”
Kilmeade continued: “He should be running from that, period. I don’t care his point of view, that is not a good thing for him. I thought that was absolutely awful. Even though he is winning in the polls, that will not help.”
The political commentator noted that while President Joe Biden is vulnerable moving into the 2024 election, it was ill-advised “for President Trump to spend 80 percent of his time complaining about court cases instead of just looking at his own record and what he would have done.”
Saturday’s Waco event was reportedly Trump’s first official campaign rally in his bid for the 2024 Republican nomination for resident.
During the event, Trump blasted the Department of Justice for the “weaponization” of its assets — citing as examples the FBI’s raid on his Mar-a-Lago property and the Manhattan district attorney’s probe, which he referred to as a “witch hunt.”
Support for Trump at rallies remains high, with last attendance at last Saturday’s event topping 25,000.
