An irate passenger slapped an India Airlines pilot after learning his plane would be delayed for 13 hours.
Angry customers have posted dozens of complaints in recent weeks — alleging airline administrator incompetence leads to unnecessary delays.
The long delay was announced by pilot Anup Kumar, who announced the schedule change without explanation.
The enraged passenger, Sahil Kataria, who was traveling from Delhi to Goa, charged up the isle toward the pilot when he heard the pilot’s announcement, reported India Today.
When Kataria reached the cockpit area of the plane, he struck Kumar with his open hand.
Staff and bystanders were initially stunned and in shock by the brazen assault but quickly intervened — an attendant stepped between the pilot and the assailant which allowed a passenger to grab Kataria then force him back to his seat.
As Kataria was escorted back to this seat, a crying crew member said, “This is wrong what you did. You cannot do this.”
Kataria is eventually escorted off the plane by armed guards before he later apologizes to Kumar.
Jam Press later reported the flight was delayed due to dense fog across the region.
Last week, Bollywood actress Radhika Apte complained on Instagram that her full plane was held on the tarmac for hours while IndiGo staff coordinated a crew change.
“I had a flight at 8:30. It’s 10:50 now and the flight has still not boarded,” the angry actress posted.. “BUT the flight said we were boarding and put all the passengers in the aerobridge and LOCKED IT! The passengers with small babies, elderly people have been locked in for over an hour. The security won’t open the doors. The staff has ABSOLUTELY NO CLUE!”
Apte added, ”I managed to escape briefly to speak to the very stupid staff woman outside who kept saying there is no issue and no delay 🙂 now I’m locked inside AND they just told us that we will be here till minimum 12pm all locked in. No water no loo. Thanks for the fun ride!!”
IndiGo Airlines and the pilot have filed charges against Kataria
Though many commenting on the viral post indicated airline staff contributed to the problem with poor communication and planning, most rebuked Kataria for his outlandish behavior.
One passenger said: “Frustration doesn’t give a passenger the right to physically assault a crew member.”
Another wrote, “This maniac should be put on the no-fly list at least for 3 years.”
Most who commented on the post noted how both airline and passenger mishandled the situation. One wrote: “Both airlines and passengers are at fault here. X is full of complaints against Indigo where they are not communicating the delay and status correctly with passengers, taking them for a ride. On the other hand, no amount of frustration gives anyone the right to physically assault someone. That’s criminal.”
