During a Wednesday hearing of the House Oversight Committee, Rep. Gary Palmer (R-AL) joked about the Green New Deal after the lights unexpectedly went out.
While Palmer was questioning former Twitter executives surrounding the handling of tweets by supreme leader of Iran Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, an electrical issue suddenly caused the lights to go out and forced the hearing to recess.
An unidentified man could be heard in the moments after the power outage, saying, “Did Twitter do that?”
As emergency lights came on, Palmer joked, “Sounds like the Green New Deal to me,” drawing some laughter from people in the room.

Khamenei has a history of posting tweets targeting Israel, including ones that called for “armed resistance,” and called the country a “cancerous growth” that needs to be “uprooted and destroyed.”
The tweets and lack of action taken by Twitter prompted questions from then-FCC commissioner Ajit Pai in 2020.
“Serious question for @Twitter: Do these tweets from Supreme Leader of Iran @khamenei_ir violate ‘Twitter Rules about glorifying violence’?” Pai wrote, referencing the rule Twitter claimed former president Donald Trump violated when he tweeted “when the looting starts, the shooting starts,” in the midst of the riots in Summer of 2020.
The Green New Deal was introduced by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) shortly after she won her first term to the House of Representatives in the 2018 elections, defeating then-Rep. Joe Crowley.
The program reportedly seeks to combat climate change and to “promote justice and equity” among “frontline and vulnerable communities.”
The hearing was on Twitter’s censorship of multiple issues, including a report by the New York Post on the contents of a laptop abandoned by Hunter Biden as the primary focus, when the lights went out, according to a tweet by CSPAN.
