An Iowa mother of seven appeared before board of education members in an outfit she declared inappropriate for appearing in public. She announced it was the same outfit an adult male wore during a drag queen show at Ankeny schools.
Kimberly Reicks, founder of Iowa Mama Bears, asked board members for an apology and “to make sure that this doesn’t happen again on school grounds,” according to a Des Moines Register report.
“I want to know: Does this outfit make you turn your head?” she asked as she turned to address the small audience at the meeting. “Is this outfit appropriate for anybody here to see?
“Because if this makes your head turn, if this p—-s you off, then it should,” Reicks continued. “Because this guy walked into our school, wearing exactly the same thing.”
Ankeny High School’s Gay-Straight Alliance in May hosted the after-school drag performance as part of an end-of-year meeting, inviting guest performers from the Iowa Youth Parade Pageant, according to the report, which cited an earlier school district statement.
Administrators reportedly did not approve the performance in advance and claimed organizers did not follow protocol, the district said.
Monday’s meeting was not the first time the activist mom crossed swords with the district. She sued Ankeny Community School District over its enforcement of mandatory mask policies. After she lost at trial level, Reicks appealed to the state’s Supreme Court.
Reicks said one daughter’s elementary school segregated her child after the six-year-old’s pediatrician issued her a medical exemption to the school’s mask mandate, according to the Iowa Mama Bears website. She claims the school targeted, bullied, and emotionally abused her kindergartner, which prompted her to begin legal action.
Although her lawsuit failed, she accomplished her goal when she appeared alongside Gov. Kim Reynolds (R-IA), during a signing ceremony for legislation outlawing mask mandates in Iowa schools.
Her latest mission seems to be ensuring the district’s LGBTQ club is not allowed to stage similar prurient performances like the drag show in May.
