House Speaker Nancy Pelosi experienced an awkward audience nonreaction during a speech hailing President Joe Biden for the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act.
While standing alongside Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Pelosi claimed the “landmark law,” which Biden signed last month, is “driving down costs for kitchen table items for America’s working families.”
“Mr. President, thank you for unifying and inspiring a vision of a stronger, fairer, safer future for all our children. Your extraordinary leadership has made this glorious day possible,” Pelosi said.
As the audience sat silent, Pelosi attempted to broach the awkward pause by telling the audience “that’s an applause line,” which prompted the audience to begin applauding.” Pelosi continued, “And let us salute Leader Schumer (and) his colleagues in the Senate for their extraordinary leadership and the success in bringing this bill to the floor.”
The previous awkwardness was touched on when Schumer joked, “That’s an applause line!”

While Pelosi may have claimed that the costs of kitchen table items were being driven down, Tuesday’s economic report, which put inflation at 8.3% year-to-year, contradicts that claim.
While gasoline prices may have declined since June, the cost of food and housing remain incredibly high, with the Daily Wire reporting that “month-over-month prices for food, shelter, and medical services continued to tick upward, producing a 0.1% overall price increase from July.”
President Biden later addressed the crowd to celebrate last month’s passage of the Inflation Reduction Act after inflation was brought down from the July high of 9.1%. However, it is still the highest since the summer of 1982 when inflation was sitting at 6.9%.
Speaking from the White House lawn, Biden called the Inflation Reduction Act the “single most important legislation passed in the Congress to combat inflation and one of the most significant laws in our nation’s history.”
“We’re going to build a … future here in the United States of America with American workers, with American companies, with American-made products. And after years of some of the biggest corporations in the United States paying zero in federal income tax,” Biden said. “They’ll now have to begin to literally pay their fair share today.”
