Senator Rand Paul, R-Ky., has issued a warning to Dr. Anthony Fauci. Should the GOP take back Congress in the midterms, the head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases should prepare to testify under oath about the COVID pandemic.
Paul argued that the American People had the right to know if there was anything hidden from them, particularly if there was any truth behind rumors of a cover-up for a leak from a lab in Wuhan, China.
“I think it’s very good news for the truth,” Paul said. “If he’s going to stick around, we’ll wait to see if it happens. But if he’s in public employment, we will subpoena him. He will have to appear and testify under oath. If Republicans take charge of the House or the Senate or both, he will have to testify under oath because a million Americans died. And we want to know about was there a cover-up in trying to suppress any link to the lab in China?”
“I do fully believe this virus, this pandemic that killed 6 million people around the world, leaked from the lab,” Paul continued. “But I think there was a concerted effort by him and his colleagues to cover this up and make sure it didn’t come to light, that the NIH was funding that lab and that there was reasonable scientific evidence that suggests that it came from the lab. So he’s going to be made to testify under oath. And I hope he sticks around because we do have some questions.”

Fauci had previously announced that he would be stepping down from his role as director of the NIAID, although he later clarified that he would not be retiring but would be simply stepping down from his current role.
Accusations that Fauci participated in or had knowledge of gain-of-function research in a Wuhan lab that created COVID are still unconfirmed, but Paul hopes to change that. Last year, Paul passed a bill that banned funding to Chinese gain-of-function research.
At the time, Paul expressed skepticism at the virus’ natural origins, as Fauci had originally insisted.
“We may never know whether the pandemic arose from the lab in Wuhan, but we do know that so far no intermediate animal host has been discovered,” Paul said in his speech at the passing of the bill. “Thousands of animals at the wet market have been looked at, none of them have carried COVID-19. We’ve tried to infect COVID-19 into bats, it doesn’t grow well in bats. It seems most adapted and suitable for humans.”
